    About Ballistol

Ballistol is OK and I like the fact I can treat cuts and scrapes with it since it is licorice smelling mineral oil! And some folks are drawn to it because it was "the superior German engineered lube of the SS and Wehrmacht", etc, etc.

Any of you 1911 guys tell me what happened here?

I'd pull the long guide rod out and just use Wolff springs. Both Kimber's I had came with a owner's manual that clearly stated to change the recoil spring every 5000 rounds. The only other gun maker to do that was Sig back in the 80's.

1911 failure to feed last round

FWIW. Retired police and a firearms instructor for over 20 years. Carried Kimber's for about 6 of those until I got tired of the weight on my skinny hips! This will upset a LOT of people but engineering-wise, any 8 round mag that is the same size as a 1911 7 round mag is going to have issues. I...

Want to smack the Subaru engineers (oil filter placement).

The old Honda K24 was not much better on the CRV's. Top of the engine block and the right drive axle was in the way. When you loosened the filter, the oil ran down the side of the engine, dripped on the axle shaft, hit the subframe cross member and started to fill the hollow area of the stamped...

Anyone else never own an oil burning vehicle?

FWIW, way back in the 80's Consumer Reports tested a Mercedes and they noted that it burned about a quart of oil during the instrumented testing. This was acceleration, performance and handling phase. They contacted MB and MB wrote a letter CLEARLY AND BLUNTLY stating that was to be expected...

    Post your latest oil change

Giving my 188,000 mileScion XD a rest from the 15W40 and trying some 5W-40. Next time I'll try some 5W-40 Euro spec.

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

I wonder if the deteregency of the synthesized base oil of the R and P would clean up the gummed up rings of a known oil burner like the Toyo 2.4 or later Honda K24's?

Will your insurance company cover a rebuilt title vehicle?

My biggest fear of buying a "salvage title", "rebranded" or "rebuilt" vehicle is the unknown of what was compromised in the chassis. Are the crumple zones or structures that are factory designed to collapse under impact compromised and "repaired"? Will these area's hold up under another impact...

    Headlight Lens Restorer Report

I bought one OEM headlight for my 2010 Scion XD and am saving the money to buy the other. Despite polish and sealing the plastic is cracking internally and diffusing the light in a very unsafe manner. They are clear but with many tiny cracks that diffuse the light. Bit the bullet.

    HST vs Ranger T

In my experience shooting into water only, the Ranger T was just too finicky. A hollow point fired into water should ALWAYS expand yet years ago when teaching a PD sponsored Citizens Handgun Course we discovered that our 127 +p+ Ranger T's would only expand about half the time when fired into...

Lexol Heavy Duty Leather Conditioner on Aluminum Wheels!

No kidding guys. I am prepping a 2009 Mazda for sale and used Mean Green to try and clean the wheels. I can not honsetly say that it did anything at all. Well, there was a bottle of Lexol sitting there from a few hours before when I was detailing the interior. What the hell! I sprayed the Lexol...

    Headlight Lens Restorer Report

I just tried some FLITZ polish this past weekend and it is the CATS A DOUBLE S! I have tried all the various methods and FLITZ has them all beat. No kidding. Drop about 5 bucks for a tube and try it. Just use a soft cotton shirt and rub it on and into the lens gently. I'm gonna use the Sylvania...

Weighed my ford flex on the scales.

Our CX-9 Mazda is built on the same chassis and uses the 3.7 Duratec. It is a porky mother for sure. Does yours use oil on longer or harder driven trips? Ours always has and oil usage went down as I went to thicker oils. One thing for sure, my savings account is about $4000 lighter due to the...

Any Experience with 2nd Gen Ford Escape(2008-2012) 2.5's?

That is the issue with buying a used one, most people don't take care of them! I once helped a lady on the interstate in a 3.0 Taurus. 40K miles and the tranny went kah-put driving down the road. Read where the 2nd and 3rd gear bands were the issue.

Any Experience with 2nd Gen Ford Escape(2008-2012) 2.5's?

I did not know they ditched the CD4E with the V6. I still want the 2.5 just for simplicity sake!
