Castrol 0W-30 Belgium vs Castrol 0W-40 German

Different quality oils expand or contract at different rates. They follow an equation if I remember right that is similar to 1/e^(bx) where 'b' is closely related to the inverse of the viscosity index. Castrol sometimes only shows min or max values...

Castrol 0W-30 Belgium vs Castrol 0W-40 German

Interesting observation based on the numbers above. I graphed the oils here, and the 0w-40 becomes thinner than the 0w-30 @ -5c or 23f, though there's not a significant difference until you get below -25c or -13f, where the 40w is much thinner.

VW Oil Conversation - why 40 weight?

I'm guessing it's cheaper to make a 5w-40 using lower quality base oils than it is to make a 0/5w-30 with a minimum HTHS of 3.5 out of higher quality base oils since the prices in Europe seem to reflect that.

VW Oil Conversation - why 40 weight?

I've never read this before, but the idea came to me from my own experience... It's more common for Europeans to drive a manual shift transmisson than it is in the US. In stop-and-go traffic my Passat has no problem idling in gear when moving slow unless going uphill. This is when oil pressure...

    Castrol 0W30 vs 0W40

I would have bought the 30w but with WM selling the 40w at $21.66 for 5 quart jug, it's a no brainer.

All of the foreign spec sheets I've looked at mention titanium for Edge 0w40 a3/b4.

I really don't think VW wants to be cleaning valve deposits if they want return customers.

    Choosing between 0W40 and 5W40

My engine uses less Castrol than it does M1, but my engine has consumed a little oil since new. If your motor doesn't do it now, it probably will not using Castrol.
