    Rant: EV Tires

I maintained a Prius-c for someone; 3 sets of tires over ~115k miles. 2nd set were the same as the OEM (Goodyear high MPG something IDK for sure). 3rd set were top shelf Continentals [something-DWS?] NOT a Hybrid or MPG specific model. Hands down they were far superior to the OEM Hybrid...

Vehicle Sighting - '80s Plymouth Caravelle

"Different Folks, Different Strokes" I feel like 95% of them were either totaled by the new drivers who inherited them 3rd hand from their parents, junked for scrap or donated to charity.

Add Water to Battery or Acid?

+1 on distilled water only (The water evaporated, the acid did not) FWIW a few years ago I pulled 6 pairs of large batteries that were newish, but left to bake in the desert for 2-3 years. (Literally, baking in a motorpool in Africa where it was 90-120 every day). Cleaned up, we could only...

Just witnessed a wheel fly off a car!

I was leading a military convoy; 5 HMMVs I think. Truck behind me changes lanes, slows then.... Out of the corner of his eye he sees his own rear tire pass him on the left. 😲 Broke off at the axle. Luckily it bounced and came to rest in the grass. Driver held the truck steady and slowed...

1 Million Mile Tundra - Vic Shepard does 1 Million miles for second time

Big question, is Toyota going to give him another free one? I would assume one of the $80k+ LTD Hybrids. Yeah, that has to be a lot of gas... He needs to link up and be sponsored by the Fuelly app (Heck, go full Ricky-Bobby and throw Waze, Buccees and Bass-Pro shop decals on there) Imagine...

La Quinta Inns: OK place to stay for a night?

Mediocre at best 2nd life hotels, meaning it was a 1st rate Marriott or whatever 10 years ago, then the owners would not do what it takes to refurb, keep it up etc. Owner switches to a lower standard franchise. Dead giveaways: old tub with a curtain and 10 years worth of caulk and/or bath...

Oil filter for high oil pressure track car?

Wait!!!!! WTH? You put a v6 in one of the, if not the last cool Wankle car ever made????? (All in good fun, no offense intended, America, your ride, your $. Just seems like blasphemy to me)

Waymo self driving taxi experience in Phoenix

There is no way these guys are making a profit. They must have deeeeep pockets and playing the loooong game. Agreed, there has to be some collaboration with Jag and who knows what other space tech is in these things (I'm guessing like Raytheon, Lockheed or similar high end force) EV VW or...

Now that Uber & Lyft destroyed taxis, they’re coming for their profits, and lowering their service…

Agreed OP. Washington Flyer (IAD and DCA) have the monopoly lock on all fares from those 2 airports... Annnnd they suck. Rates are insane now. I looked at DCA > IAD one evening recently, it was flat-rate $79 (Plus tip). Uber was $40 something.

Now that Uber & Lyft destroyed taxis, they’re coming for their profits, and lowering their service…

Agreed. Before I really had to use Uber for work (Easy approval), I would ask the desk clerk / bell hop if they could call me a "Car". They always had a "Guy" it was always a nicer Lincoln and cost less / faster than a much lower grade taxi. The only risk is you don't really know the price up...

Waymo self driving taxi experience in Phoenix

Yeah, I wish my Grandfather was still alive to see this. He was born in 1919, worked at RCA during the slide rule days and was fascinated with the space race and such. Amazing times we are living in, think about it from coal/steam locomotives to autonomous electric taxis on demand in ~100...

Invisible Fence for a dog. GPS based

I would not do it. I have known several people with this kind of thing, none of them were happy or really kept them for long. I'll share one downside experience. My neighbor down the straight had a ~40 pound lab mix. When he saw something he really wanted to chase (Like a squirrel) he just...

Waymo self driving taxi experience in Phoenix

Not sure where to post this... I was in Phoenix this week for a short business trip. Saw these around the airport, "Waymo" self driving taxi. Next morning I needed a short ride and away I went. It was super cool. 8am on a weekday, I would call it light rush hour. Works off an app of...

anything to look out for when getting a brake fluid change?

I would respectfully disagree with this. $0.02: Brake lines are a one way circuit. it takes a loooong time, if ever for it to circulate. I have 1st hand experience with a few old cars that had very long periods with no flush (One definitely had a turkey baster job done a year prior); each of...

Do you miss the days of Everything PTFE / Teflon? Any positive snake oil experiences?

Slight thread drift... I was at Wally World last week looking for some chemicals (Brake Clean etc.) That section is small as heck now, really sad, used to be both sides of a LONG isle. And they had nothing on Pep Boys, that place was like 20,000 square feet of additives, cleaners and...

    FJ Cruiser and 33's

Nice. And props for running the FJ Cruiser. Toyota truck MPG aside; far underrated and capable whip... 20-30 years from now young men will be searching high and low for these to restore and DD.

Mack Truck laying off 100s in PA & MD

does not make sense to me: ~ 2022 I was exploring buying a 20 foot medium duty cab on chassis : all the makers had at least 2 year waiting lists and could not even lock in a price. My line of work uses a lot of LTL and EUV trucking. Rates are still 50-100% higher than pre RONA

Anyone ever replace pads on one wheel, but not the other?

Waaaaayyyy back in the last century I worked at a place that supported mostly heavy trucking (i.e. dump trucks). It was common like when an axle seal blew and brake [shoes] were ruined by gear oil and such for just one side to be replaced. Anecdote, one dude I knew worked on trash trucks...

    Cybertruck RWD is out

I think it’s cool. I just don’t need a second full size ride, not getting rid of my Tacoma and cannot really swing another payment. (Let alone ins. And VA personal property taxes 😡). TBH: another 2-3 years is like to get a 3. Extend the life of the Tacoma and save gas $. Maybe by then...

Do shops charge women more for car repairs?

Name brand / chain dealer I would say absolutely not. These days, way too much risk to isolate any group in particular. They get "Caught" and "Blown-up" on the web/yelp/facebook/60 minutes and they are doneski (They probably try to sell maximum whatever to everyone equally)
