Difference between M1 0w30 afe and 0w30 esp?

Oddly enough, my does say "requires". I don't know if that's legally binding if the engine every gave up the ghost, but I haven't seen many say that before.

Difference between M1 0w30 afe and 0w30 esp?

So in a nut shell, what would be the oil of choice between Mobil 0w30 AFE and ESP for a vehicle that require API SN/SN PLUS and ISLAC GF-5? This is my dilema with my Ascent. It looks like ESP holds up better but AFE has specs that meet my requirements.

    Headlight protection

I would suspect that the HID bulb may be of poor quality. Morimoto and NHK HID bulbs seem to be pretty good regarding UV filtration. The other possibility is a higher wattage ballast (higher than 35w) is being used. If it has an effect on the outer lens, then I would pull a bulb and see what the...

Difference between M1 0w30 afe and 0w30 esp?

In my 01 Outback beater I use 5w30 Supertech. But thats non turbo and it has a hell of a lot of piston slap, so I'm really just putting a good and cheap oil in it till it dies. I don't think there is an oil that will extend it's life. I've tried rotella and other thicker oils. I don't think any...

Difference between M1 0w30 afe and 0w30 esp?

I can speak to everyones reason. But my thoughts are because many of them beat the everliving crap out of them and Rotella has shown to hold up to the abuse. 10+ years ago Rotella was one of the few 5w40's available on the shelf and it happened to be cheap. Now that there are many other Xw40...

Difference between M1 0w30 afe and 0w30 esp?

That is true for the EJ series engine. But not for the FA24DIT engines. I don't think I'd run a 5w40 in an FA. I know it's a thick vs thin thing, but Xw40 just seems excessive unless your tracking the car.

    Headlight protection

The very best you can do for headlight restoration is a 2 part clear coat, I use Spraymax 2k Glamour since I don't have the means to use a spray gun. All of these coatings and clear films are temporary and have to be redone periodically. Since ambient conditions are never the same for any...

Difference between M1 0w30 afe and 0w30 esp?

So I want to throw a wrench into this thread. I am about to do another OCI on my 2021 Subaru Ascent, which I'll likely be using 0w30 ESP in unless someone says it'll be detrimental. It has a 2.4 DIT that has been somewhat known for fuel in the oil, but I have not had that issue. While not...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

Looks like I've got some more reading to do! thank you! Well technically 0w30 isn't called out as an approved lubricant. So Subaru could technically blame an engine mechanical issue on that if it ever came up, though I doubt they would. The manual calls out 0w20 API SN Plus, ISLAC GF-6A, blah...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

I'll have to look into the threads you referred to. That simplifies it quite a bit. I'm no scholar when it comes to all of the oil terms and what it all means in the big picture. I don't really want to go to a 0w40 like ESP X3 is. Basically all I am looking for is an oil that holds up over time...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

Thank you for that info! I tried finding info about the different approvals but came up dry. I couldn't find anything regarding that. I guess I'm missing what you're trying to say. I'm not quite as well versed on the oil specs as most here, which is why I've come here to learn. I would assume...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

My only concern about ESP is that there is no mention LPSI protection. Though I would imagine since it meets the rigorous testing of MB and Porsche that it's something I should probably not even worry about. In my area the ESP ($39.99) is about $10 more for a 5qt jug than AFE($29.99). I do agree...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

Back from the dead!! Sorry it's been so freaking long. Life as usual taking up all of my time! Here are the results from the past few oil changes. It's odd because the first couple oil changes, almost 10k miles of driving, seemed to chew 0w20 and spit it out like water. The 3rd 0w20 oil change...

How to clean RTV from polished aluminum surfaces?

Seriously guys, you're blowing this out of proportion. If you use a tool for it's intended purpose, use it the way it is supposed to be used, use the grade of Bristle Disc appropriate for the material, plug your holes and clean up when you are done there will be zero problems!! If there were...

How to clean RTV from polished aluminum surfaces?

This just refers to to GM bulletin with a some added commentary. When I searched for the use of abrasive discs causing engine damage, the only thing I found was the GM bulletin and articles that referred to and just add more commentary. I could not find real world evidence of engine damage...

How to clean RTV from polished aluminum surfaces?

I'll agree that Scotch bight type pads of any type whether its on a rotating tool or by hand is not what you want to use. Even using a scotch bright pad by hand you can see the amount of abrasive material dusting very plainly. But in my 10+ years (heck, it's encroaching on 20yrs) of working on...

How to clean RTV from polished aluminum surfaces?

Thats interesting, never seen that service bulletin before. Though after reading it I think it's highly subjective and likely masking other issues GM has had. Common sense comes into play with any form of abrasive use. They mention that it can take "about 15 seconds to remove 0.203 mm (0.008...

How to clean RTV from polished aluminum surfaces?

Roloc bristle discs work best. Use white (finest grade) for aluminum machined surfaces like you’re working with and yellow or green for stuff like diff covers or cast iron stuff. 3M 3M-18733 Roloc Bristle Disc Grade - 120, Size - 2...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

My plan is to do a VOA on both M1 0w30 AFE and M1 0w30 ESP when I do the next oil change on the Ascent. I might do it sooner since I get antsy sometimes. Lol I wished Blackstone would to HTHS, but they don’t. I don’t know all the oil analysis companies that do more in-depth testing or the cost...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

So I ended up finding out that my local Advanced carries 0w30 ESP, even in a 5qt jug!! I’ll try that out on the next oil change for sure! Probably going to be May or June is my guess. I’ll probably do the next OCI at 4K also.
