post your latest transmission lubricant change.

2016 Honda Accord with 2.4 liter I4 and CVT. Out: ? 2-1/2 quarts via topside extraction. Light red color and translucent. In: 2-1/2 quarts Idemitsu Type H2. It's supposed to take 3.9 quarts but only 2-1/2 came out topside. Maybe I'll do it again in warmer weather to freshen it up.

Maybe VRP needs 4 OCI's to replenish additives to clean gunk?

Some of you may recall Texaco in the late 80ss to early 90s promoting a special fuel additive that would make your engine run better after ten tank fills. I myself bought into this for a while since there was no price difference. I never noticed a difference, and that was the point. There is...

Maybe VRP needs 4 OCI's to replenish additives to clean gunk?

With my PHEV that would be 80,000 miles! You mentioned sludge. Valvoline claims that this oil cleans piston ring lands. They don't talk about sludge which is a different subject.

Lake Speed Jr. Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

Sorry but that was a brain fart. I was questioning the opposite. There was a link to a UOA of 0w-8 HPL Premium Plus earlier in this thread [?] if I recall and it showed that oil thickening over time. I was rather wondering if starting with a 0w-8 that might thicken up along the way would be a...

Lake Speed Jr. Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

No - I am wondering if I could go thinner on a 2023 Prius that calls for 0w-16. I plan to pull an oil sample when it approaches 50k or a presumed 2300 miles on the oil that it came with. The major use case here is five miles each way to and from work which means that fuel dilution should be...

Lake Speed Jr. Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

Yeah - it's hard to argue that point. Nevertheless it would be informative to know the assumptions that went into that recommendation. It seems as if they may be factoring in short runs and low oil temperature. That makes a lot of sense in Japan. One has to wonder if 0w-16 would or wouldn't...

Lake Speed Jr. Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

I am curious as to why a 2023 Corolla recommends 0w-8 whereas my son's 2023 Prius recommends 0w-16. Don't they both employ the same 2 liter engine? Wouldn't one expect a hybrid drive train to be easier on the oil vs a traditional ICE drive train?

2-3 year old gas safe to use in Ariens Tecumseh engined snow blower?

Yes - but if you mix it in at a very small ratio your car will never notice. I've been doing this with old 2-cycle gas for decades. I've replaced one catalytic converter in my lifetime and that vehicle was never exposed to stale or 2-cycle gas. A little bit of common sense goes a long way.

    2017 Ford C-Max Energi 6658 Miles

You are dragging around several hundred pounds of battery for no benefit. Plug it in and drive in EV mode for local errands. My 2017 C-Max Energi has averaged 117 MPG over the course of two years nd 20k miles. The long term mileage was at 127 MPG prior to a long ICE road trip last weekend...

    Best oil for a hybrid?

My arguably limited reading on this subject suggests that the marketeers and possibly the engineers are arguing that hybrid engine oils don't always get up to what the rest of us consider to be normal operating temperature. That's a rather specious argument without stating the assumptions of...

    John Deere D125

No - you have a V-Twin engine there. The head gasket problem is common on the larger single cylinder engines.

    2017 Ford C-Max Energi 6658 Miles

Why? It's much more cost effective to run in EV mode while operating within the vehicle's EV range. Until yesterday I thought that Auto and EV Later modes were polar opposites. In the summer Auto seems to use the battery first whereas EV Later uses gasoline first. In the winter the Auto mode...

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

At first glance this seems excessive. That being said my former 2001 V70XC burned up two transmissions over the course of 278k miles. I never paid any attention to the transmission. Lesson learned.

It seems to me that you should consider another vehicle. Just saying...

    Post your latest E0 purchase

91 Octane E0 for $3.99/gallon at Stewart's Shops in Bennington, VT on 22 December. It was dispensed via a shared hose so I most likely got a small amount of Ethanol from whatever was left over from the customer ahead of me. I run E0 in my 2017 C-Max Energi because it typically goes 3-4 months...

    Best battery for lawn mower

No - I meant keeping it charged over the winter. Normally I put the battery on a charger and/or start the machine once a month over the winter. My lawn tractor is kept in an unheated shed and temperatures can get down to zero. We had a low of eleven degrees F on Saturday morning. AGM...

    Black oil in my ope

Sustained dry and dusty conditions would definitely have an impact on OPE. What level of attention have you given to the air filters? It seems that they would be the first line of defense against dry and dusty conditions. Changing the oil more frequently would be the next step. Personally I...

    Best battery for lawn mower

If that's the case the OP got exceptional service from the battery. Lowe's sells batteries made by East Penn Manufacturing, aka Deka. Not sure who makes Walmart batteries but I just got six years out of one. Two or three years is par for the course on any U1 battery that isn't maintained. If...

    Post your latest oil change

I recently purchased a Harbor Freight fluid extractor and performed an oil change on the "16 Accord. I ran it until it was sucking air and just assumed that all of the oil was out. Never assume. Yesterday I drained out that oil and found that only 3 of 4.5 quarts were removed. In the process...
