LSJr. The TRUTH About Valvoline's BOLD Engine Cleaning Claims

Might have to try it out on my old chevy 4.3 vortec! Its only got 110k miles. I'm the second owner, and the lifter valley was pretty nasty last time I replaced the lower intake gaskets. This oil might clean it out some.

    Post your latest oil change

Just one. Now on the second. I’ve tried m1 0w40 for 4 consecutive oci’s (each with about 2.5-3k miles) right before I got the first m1 5w30 hm. The m1 0w40 did not help with the noise at all. But using m1 5w30 HM with MMO for 2k miles got rid of the noise. I’m gonna say it was entirely MMO...

Advice needed: Potential purchase 2021+ 2.3Explorer. Known Issues, etc.

I work at a ford dealership and I drive lots of 2020+ explorers every day. First thing I want to mention is these new 2020+ model year explorers are completely different than the pre-2020 explorers. Older explorers had transverse fwd/awd configuration, and new explorers do not have fwd...

    5W-30 in Ford 2.5L, 3.3L, 3.5L, 3.7L?

This forum is like watching crazy audiophiles discussing how moving the speaker 0.0000012 inches further will make it sound better, and how lifting the cables off the ground will make the speaker sound 0.000001 times better.

    5W-30 in Ford 2.5L, 3.3L, 3.5L, 3.7L?

Funny thing that most people don’t know: My 2010 Ford Taurus SHO with the 3.5 Ecoboost is recommended by Ford to use 5w-20. 2010 Taurus was the first to get the 3.5 Ecoboost. My Taurus now has 113k miles. Only internal engine work I’ve ever done was the internal water pump at around 80k miles...

Attributes of a motor oil you look for

These are some of the attributes I look for: - Does it meet the specs that my engine needs? I got a 4.3 sbc Vortec. This engine runs on anything that resembles oil. There really isn’t a “spec” as long as it’s oil, and there is enough oil in the oil pan. All jokes aside, here we go: - Is...

Is there a recommended oil for short tripping

I see no evidence that engines cannot reach 300k miles or more when the recommended oil is used. There are hundred millions of vehicles in the US and Canada that have just used the manufactures recommended viscosity oil (5w20, 0w20, 5w30 and etc) for hundreds of thousands of miles, and they are...

Is there a recommended oil for short tripping

Just use whatever viscosity your manufacturer recommends for your vehicle. Brand really doesn’t matter, as long as it’s API SP. Any affordable name brand oils will do the job great. With short trips, you should follow the severe duty category maintenance intervals, which generally is a 3-4k...

With MPG ZDDP is more important than viscosity

Not sure if you're saying more ZDDP results in better mpg or worse mpg, or less ZDDP results in better or worse mpg. Right amount of ZDDP reduces wear, but also can increase friction, which can result in lower mpg. Using the oil with the most zddp isn’t good! You need just enough for it to be...

Are thicker gear oils better for differentials?

-Application is daily driving. Mostly highway. - No towing. Just occasionally moving around about 500lbs worth of stuff inside the car with 4 people traveling 200-300miles, and driving about 80mph down the highway. - I live in South Carolina, so it doesn’t ever go below 28F, but it does go...

Are thicker gear oils better for differentials?

I’m getting ready to change my differential fluids (front and rear) on my 2001 Chevy Blazer 4door 4x4. Right now I have Supertech 80w90 Dino gear oil in the front and rear diffs, which I put in about a year ago. There’s no noise from the differentials, so they are in good shape. I just want...

Super Springs International, What’s the deal?

I’ve been seeing ads of the “airless airbag” products this company makes all over the internet for a couple days now’s I haven’t found any videos on “pros and cons”, all I see is videos showing the airless airbags working on a vehicle, but with zero explanations. What’s the deal with this...

Oil with best anti-wear for Chevy 3.6 timing chain protection?

The best thing is short oil change intervals. 3k-5k mile OCI. That’s it. You do not need any special boutique oils. You’re wasting your money if you do buy expensive oils. Just use regular full synthetic oils you can easily find at local Walmarts. They are perfectly fine, as long as you change...

What testing goes into the 20k Mobil Annual Protection marketing claim.

The official name of the test is called a “Marketing Test.” They do marketing tests to see how well it sells. If they sell well, then in a couple of months of even years they change their claim to 25k, or maybe even 30k. But all jokes aside, it really is all marketing, because they do state...

Is one type of coolant better for heat transfer?

Best thing you can do for maximum cooling is to keep your radiator fins clean and free of debris. Keep it clean just like the day it left the factory. Radiators get hit with tar, bugs, dust, dirt, and etc. Clean the radiator fins to maximize heat transfer. Also, don’t get any paint on the...

    Overfilling by 0.5 qt - ‘17 Miata

The oil level in the oil pan will go down quite a bit (about half way down the low and full mark of the dipstick) when the engine is running compared to when the engine is off. A lot of the oil on the sump will actually be pumped up by the oil pump, and will be circulating in the oiling...

Do you follow severe differential oil change interval?

My 2001 Chevy Blazer 4x4 got its first front and rear differential fluid change at 105,000 miles. The diff fluids never got changed until 105,000 miles. It had the factory fluid in it. The oil looked black, but there really wasn’t any metal in the fluid, or any visible wear on the gears. The...

    0W30/5W30 in a 2024 GM 5.3L V8?

I would just get any cheap API SP rated 0w20. Those lifters do not fail because of oil weight. I would change the oil every 5k miles or sooner. But if I had a newer 5.3 Silverado, the first thing I personally would do is getting those afm lifters and cam out of the motor and putting in regular...

    2024 Maverick

I work at a huge ford dealership that sells at least 6-8 cars a day. We just can’t keep these mavericks on the lot! We get lots of mavericks every week, and all of them fly off the lot even before we park it on the lot for display. They never ever sit on the lot for more than 2-3 days...
