M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

Is it true GM recommends DexosD 0W-20 for this engine? If so, I’m guessing the ESP 5W-30 is fine and the X3/X4 even better since it carried Dexos2.

    M1 ESP 0W-30 vs M1 Euro/FS 0W-40

They are somewhat interchangeable, but one targets modern mid SAPS standards and one targets A3/B4 full SAPS requirements. The best choice depends on what your engine and use cases are. The real natural comparison is ESP X4 and FS 0W-40, btw.

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

I do think the 5W products are sometimes cost reduced versions. Problem is it’s impossible to tell.

M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

Drive and don’t worry about it. But… ESP X4 0W-40 is the best oil they sell in my opinion at least for PCMO.

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

I highly doubt this is true. BMW is shipping 382 hp 3.0L cars that run at 230 all the time for maximum efficiency and on 0W-12 now.

What about this one? Or the higher RPM one?

I Do Cars tore a recalled engine down and it appears to be bad crankshaft finishing that starts it all.

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

Yes, all true... but then why do they ship LT1s with 0W-40 with identical bearing clearances? Would this defect even have been noticed if they had been running 0W-40? This invalidates your prior claims that there is some magic in the design of modern engines requiring or benefiting from 0W-20...

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

GM even invalidates everything he claims by running 0W-40 from factory in the LT engines with same bearing clearances and recommending it for the “bad” engines. It’s pretty clear that GM should be running 0W-40 in these engines because the nearly identical LT engines in the lower volume Camaro...

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

Sadly I cannot find the Blackstone PDF from 2008 since it was on an email service that is defunct and I never archived it. Either way, you can go find modern examples on Bimmerpost and they are all some random LL-04 / LL-12FE etc factory fill. Oh and deactivate running in check is just...

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

They change the oil and diff fluid on M cars.

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

No, it’s completely wrong. I’ve had three M cars. I sampled my old (first) Z4M at break in service in 2008 and it was identical to the Castrol TWS that is the normal fill for that car. They do not change ANY maps or anything and they do not even change the transmission fluid anymore on 6MT...

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

They do a break in change but there’s no evidence it is a special oil.

    GM aborting move to 0w-40

What are you arguing? The Euro 30s are pretty much exactly 3.5 and lower than the 40s which are 3.6-3.8. There are not many, in fact there are very few >=3.5 HTHS 0W-30 readily available on the market, and none of them have any GM approvals or are stocked by GM dealers. They will also go under...

    GM aborting move to 0w-40

I'm confused, do you mean in general or for this GM engine? They moved to a 40 because they need the higher HTHS a 30 would not provide.
  16. C

    GM aborting move to 0w-40

Nothing. Manufacturers went to 0W because it helps their fuel economy numbers. The warm-up cycle is where they lose a lot of efficiency. That and perhaps simplification since you can then recommend the same oil to both Alberta and Arizona.

Do any manufacturers still use break in oil?

I have no idea why moly would be good for break in. It would slow break-in, if anything. LSJ and some others recommend a higher friction oil for break-in. The Japanese oil just has a lot of moly for fuel econ. Euros all just use the same oil that factory recommends. BMW is the only one still...

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

If you can run a Euro 3.5 HTHS 30 you can run a Euro 40 also. The HTHS is just about the same and so the dynamic viscosity is. Not saying you need to but there’s not much daylight between them.
