Post Your Latest (Motorcycle) Oil Change!

Looks like it is about time for an oil and filter change.

How old is too old for stored oil??

Manufacturers typically say that the shelf life is about 5 years. I probably wouldn't go longer than 5 years in my car. I have gone longer than that for oil used in my lawn mower. Before using it in your car, open the bottle (do not shake it) and pour it into a clear container to look for...

Dangers of low viscosity oils a problem waiting to happen?

Engines are specifically designed to be compatible with the thinner oils. An example of one change is that bearing surfaces on the crank shaft are larger in engines that are designed for 0W-16 or 0W-8 vs a similar engine designed for 5W-30. Although the oil film may be weaker on that bearing...

    ATF for Power Steering?

It's just a basic hydraulic system. Any compatible dextron atf fluid will be fine. Transmissions have clutches and other complex mechanisms and can be more picky about fluid choices. Power steering only has a simple pump.

What oil injection oil, and can I do away with it?

A friend has a 2-cycle Suzuki 175 with the oil pump. Looking at the service manual, it seems that the oil is pumped through the main bearings before getting mixed with the fuel. Maybe I'm wrong, but at least in that bike it doesn't look like pre-mixing the oil and fuel is a good idea.

78 XS750 with excessive oil burning and lower compression in center cyl.

I use TCw-3 and Stabil Marine in gas for my mower and generators year-round. I also winterize my motorcycles with it. 1oz TCw-3 per 5 gallons of gas. Stabil per the dosage on the bottle. I start using it in the bikes in October so it gets run through the system.

78 XS750 with excessive oil burning and lower compression in center cyl.

Put it on the center stand, take off the rear wheel, lift the front wheel. If you need more elevation, put a board under the center stand. You should be able to get the cylinders vertical. Then do your B-12 soak.

Winterization...to drain or not to drain?

I use the blue marine Stabil and also a shot of two cycle oil to winterize my bikes and small engines. 1 ounce of 2 cycle oil per 5 gallons of gas. I use TCW-3 marine oil. It has anti-corrosion additives in it. So, when the carbs are run dry, any left over fuel in the bowl evaporates and...

Winterization...to drain or not to drain?

I would drain the carbs. You never know how long it will be "winterized". Something could come up and you skip a year of riding. Gas in the tank is relatively sealed and stabilizer should be fine for that.

    Can Am Spyder

Take one for a test drive with your wife. After that, if she is open to riding more, find a place to rent one. Go for some longer rides a few times to be sure she likes it. My experience has been that if two wheels was the excuse for not riding, a different excuse will materialize after being...

Does oil really go bad after 1 year if it was previously opened?

Open a new bottle of olive oil and smell it. Then, open and smell the old bottle. I bet the you can tell the difference!

Does oil really go bad after 1 year if it was previously opened?

Oil in a capped bottle will be fine for a few years, no problem. I change my small engines (mower, generators, etc) every two years at a maximum. Lawnmower oil still looks amber after two mowing seasons (about 60hrs total). Just think about the millions of lawnmowers that never get an oil...

    PP 0W20 vs M1 AFE 0W20

I'm running PP 0W-20 because of the rebate. It's hard to beat that deal. I change at 5000 miles, so either will be fine for that distance.

Two electric home water heaters cheaper than a single gas one?

I suppose it depends on how water is run throughout the house. A friend's house had a bathroom all the way on the other end of the house. He installed a local water heater for the sink and shower. It ended up saving him money on his water and energy bills because the wife and kids kept...

what are your thoughts on a 2024 new Mitsubishi outlander sport trail edition?

I don't see many Mitsubishi cars here in Michigan. Lots of Crosstreks on the road here. A friend has had one for a few years now and puts a lot of commuting miles on. No mention of any issues with his car.

Glass top or coil top cooktop.

I replaced a coil top with a glass top 6 years ago. The glass cleans up nicely and is not scratched at all. Just don't use cast iron on it and it should last a long time. I also use a 29qt Presto pressure canner on it without any issues.

    What 0W-16 are you using?

My owner's manual only shows 0W-16 in the chart. It also is missing the paragraph about 5W-30 and 10W-30. So, I'm running with 0W-20 so I can stock one oil type in my garage for both of my vehicles. My Honda CR-V is still running great after 14 years and 150K miles on 0W-20, so it should be...

    What 0W-16 are you using?

I'm running Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 in my 2.5L gas Rav4. I drained the factory fill of 0W-16 at 500miles and put in 0W-20. Changed again at 5000 miles. When I go in for the 10K mile checkup later this fall, I might just leave the Toyota Care free oil change 0W-16 in there for the winter. I've...

    HPL EC30

I have a quart of EC30 in my 150K mile CR-V. I'm a few K miles into this oil change and it does not seem to be getting any darker than a normal oil change. I expected it to get darker while cleaning, but I haven't observed any difference yet. Maybe my engine isn't very dirty inside? Maybe...

What is a good dry chain lube for oring chain - even though owners manual says no

Dry lube is a tough call. It goes on wet and then the carrier liquid dries off. The problem is that most do not offer any rust protection. I'm using Liquid Wrench Chain and Cable lube on my Honda's chain. I never clean it. I just re-lube every couple of tank fulls or after riding in the...
