    2015+ Honda CRV

A friend of mine has a '18, '19, and just bought a '21 or 22? model, all used for rural mail delivery and they are doing great. I think the highest mileage one of that gen is coming up on 150K, but both the older ones have been running a route for at least two years and they are not needing much...

    First gen XC90?

Exactly the data I was looking for. I know any vehicle of that age with that level of tech/amenities is bound to be a money pit if you just drop it at a shop anytime something happens - I'm trying to glean if a more hands-on owner could stay in the black on one.

    First gen XC90?

In this case she's going to college locally, the family has my phone number, and I'm within 10 miles of wherever she's at 90% of the time, so it's not like she'll be hours away at the mercy of the nearest import shop if something happens. Which, like I said, hasn't yet in spite of my pessimism...

    First gen XC90?

Professional solo mechanic of 8 years here. I've worked on very few Volvos in my time, but one that I have quite a bit of history with is a 1st gen XC90 T5, owned by the same family since 2017, now has over 220K on it. While it hasn't been driven off any cliffs or through any lakes, they've...

Suzuki SX4 cracked block - any help?

I was actually able to find a 45K mile used engine through LKQ from Canada for $1700, already on order. Has a one-year warranty for a second-time replacement so the owner can put the vehicle back on the road, save up/look for a different car and sell the Suzuki while it's still operational and...

Suzuki SX4 cracked block - any help?

They called me because it was overheating, but I believe the cracked block is the cause of the leak that eventually lead to low coolant>>>overheat. Didn't blow the head gasket, I've driven it quite a bit after filling it back up and it holds perfect temp. Based on what I find on forums, it's a...

Suzuki SX4 cracked block - any help?

Had to break the news to a long-time customer of mine that the block on their 2010 SX4 (2.0L, 192K mi.) is cracked. I find mention online of a substantially extended warranty for the 2.4L version of this motor used in the Grand Vitara, etc. If there any such coverage for the 2.0 in the US?

GM product barely out of warranty and can't get parts...

Weird, I don't see it when I visit the site or even by typing in the P/N.

    More V4 vs V6

From my observations, there are plenty of V6 designs over the years that last just fine, run smooth, and get good MPG. There are plenty of other examples but the Buick 3800 proved that point by itself, long ago. However, historically there are even more I-4 designs that are darn good engines...

Pentastar 3.6 oil cooler failure. What really causes or exacerbates it?

AFAIK there's no OE upgraded part for the lifters that will almost certainly tick by 150K. No OE revised part for GM 6Lx0 torque converters that burn the TC clutch out in as little as 60-70K miles or AFM lifters that just, stick in their compressed position and require disassembly of the whole...

Pentastar 3.6 oil cooler failure. What really causes or exacerbates it?

Thank you. In the case of just generally poorly-made things (not just a bad batch, etc.) the blame lies on the company designing the product and dictating the specs and quality, not the company in another country contracted to make it.

GM product barely out of warranty and can't get parts...

Especially with something like the Grand National, the only thing keeping any GN-specific parts available at this age is enthusiast demand. It's predictable/understandable that the majority of support for a car like that would move to aftermarket if not niche specialist - I'm heavy in those...

GM product barely out of warranty and can't get parts...

Basic technology involving the primary components was a major factor then. Metallurgy, lubrication, etc. There were a few exceptions - Mercedes, for one, was achieving modern-day longevity from a majority of their powertrains designed in the 70's. That's a tiny fraction of the limitation to...

GM product barely out of warranty and can't get parts...

I think this "evolving precedent", if you will, for durability of original parts and availability/quality of their replacements is evidence to support my opinion that we, the consumer, are being taken advantage of to a perpetually greater degree by the manufacturers.

GM product barely out of warranty and can't get parts...

I know Trax/Encore aren't one of GM's best sellers, but it's far from a truly rare model.

GM product barely out of warranty and can't get parts...

I've been a small town, solo mechanic since 2016. Work on a little bit of everything, lots of semi-new and some old. The other day a repeat customer dropped off their 2017 Buick Encore because the wipers (that had only worked on high for several months) quit altogether. Looked up the wiring...

Oil leaks on Chevy LS engines

I haven't seen a truly high number of vehicles meeting this criteria so it's more of a casual observation, but the rear main seal seems to have a much higher rate of starting to leak above 250K.

Modern Turbo Engine Reliability and Durability

Inherent fear of turbochargers/engines with them is a 20+ year old mindset. There are plenty of N/A engines with chronic issues, and a good percentage of boosted designs that prove very reliable. It all depends on the specific design aka how much of a crap the manufacturer gave about it...
