Alkylated Naphthalenes with Willi Gartner (King Industries)

I thought he was gravitating towards the "tighter tolerances" argument for using thinnish oil. BITOG ain't havin' that.

Alkylated Naphthalenes with Willi Gartner (King Industries)

Watched it today and enjoyed it. Did he really say "engines are tighter now" ??

Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

There are also coolant jackets between cylinders. Temperature control is a huge factor. A driver would always want to do successive UOAs and see what their specific driving conditions lead to IMV. These engines have ~ 42 % thermal efficiency and thin oils make for a good marriage.

Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

Toyota might have been inclined to continue their trend towards thinner, ie 0W16. But this is very high output from a 3 cylinder engine. I am comparing this oil spec with Corolla, Camry, RAV4.

    What makes Euro oils different?

Would you expect the TBN to continue to deplete at the same rate, and with heightened concern after 9,795km ? My guess is no and I posit that your 0W40 would be good for a while longer.

Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

So true. I remember going bonkers over my 1988 Toyota truck with the 4 cylinder 22R engine. They used nickel in the engine. Strong block. LOL. Plastic timing chain sprocket. Head gasket went at 450k miles. Loved my 2000 Silverado 4.8L push rod V8. Tranny went at 300k miles. It never consumed...

    API SQ Coming Soon...

It's always the testing that interests me. Here with SQ we have Sequence IIH and Sequence VH to more greatly address engine cleanliness at high and low temps. With SP, we might remember, it took a long time for oils to pass Sequence X, dealing with dispersement of small, dense sooty particles...

    2021 Sienna - Can I use 0w-20 permanently?

There was a Sienna with shocking fuel dilution. YMMV.

    API SQ Coming Soon...

The ONLY aspect of the continued 0.9% sulfated aah threshold that Anita mentions is Gasoline Particulate Filter durability. I continue to have a strong preference for thin and beefy.

Memorial Day Lecture "Go For Broke", the 442 Combat Regiment and 100th Battalion

I had a Haole friend who worked at Southwest Airlines Cargo SJC. He talked often about his uncle by marriage, a 442nd MOH winner (1 of those 21) for action in Europe. My friend moved back to Hawaii but the reverence Island people have for these heroes--and we all should have is really...

Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

I did notice that Toyota "backed off" and spec'd 0W20 on Corolla GR, high output 3 cylinder. I see temperature control as the big factor...and quality control in design and manufacturing lol. BTW cudda swore EE said something like "increasing viscosity did not improve protection" or...

Maybe these GM engines should be using stout yet relatively thin oil. I am thinking of HPL's offerings. --OVERKILL 0W20. --wwillson's beefy 5W20. --RDY4WAR's 10W20. Of course thicker must be on the table. M1 0W40 or ESPs. AMSOIL's 0W30 SS.

Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

Yes. But EE made this comment in the context of "justifying" thin oil. Don't dispersents help with such things as tiny dense soot with timing chain protection per SP/GF-6 testing requirements ? I would never tow a boat or trailer with 0W20 though.

Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

What is the explanation for why GM recommends 0W20 in replacement engines ? Why would they seek avoiding CAFE penalties when warranty engine replacement is exponentially costlier ? EE stated that specifically designed additive packages make thin oil effective without viscosity. As far as...

Toyota's New Low Viscosity Transaxle Fluid

Thank you all for excellent feedback. I just had the rear differential fluid changed with Toyota Genuine eTransaxle Fluid TE. The mechanic stated that the eCVT is sealed and is "lifetime fluid". At 60k miles. 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid. At 90k miles, I am going to go badger the service...

LSJr ... Talking Engine Oils of the Future

Thank you Sir. From what I am reading as a layman, physics and chemistry come into play. DLC depletion rate is influenced by viscosity, temperature, pressure, naturally. But other factors include respective engine parts, metals involved and interactions between the various components, forms...

Excellent. As a delivery driver subcontractor in California, I applaud. My vehicle runs very clean, thank you. I abhor the totally unnecessary upcharges we are subjected too. Common sense is uncommon.
