    Motorad Thermostats

I have used the Motorad UltraStat in my last 3 old cars (PN 5200-195) and I love them. One of the best built thermostats for the money (RA has them for about $9 CDN) in my opinion. I installed one last year when I refreshed the cooling system on my Impala and it has been excellent (precise...

Were vehicles ever available with manual disc brakes?

Two come to mind immediately: 1 - 1970 442 W30 with a 4 speed, the camshaft used in the manual transmission engine did not produce enough vacuum at idle to operate the booster. AT equipped W30's had a milder cam so power disc was an option. With the MT only manual disc was available. 2 - My...

The Parts Cannon Let Me Down!

Glad you are up and running. Fret not... even the best fall victim to the parts cannon on occasion. I know I have.

    Performance Engine Oil Kaizen

Good article, thanks. I'd like to try the GP-1 assembly gel next motor I do. When I was a kid I used Lubriplate, no issues, then I changed my philosophy to just regular engine oil for the bearings and for the cam/lifters the lube generally supplied with the camshaft manufacturer, also no issues...

    Best Hotdogs

I am partial to the Kirkland Signature Beef Polish Sausage from Costco. I grill them at home and with a brioche hot dog bun, mustard, onion and relish they are pretty good.(y)

The Cost Of Cartridge Filters Compared To Spin Ons

I am strictly referencing the 67 to 68 time frame with Chevrolet when the transition occurred from cartridge to spin on in my post. I assumed when you asked "By that time were the Chevrolet cartridges full-flow or partial-flow like the earlier ones?" we were referring to that period. Filters may...

The Cost Of Cartridge Filters Compared To Spin Ons

Exactly. Those were my observations as well with the guys I used to cruise with... just another possible point of failure.

The Cost Of Cartridge Filters Compared To Spin Ons

Interesting, thanks. I clarified my post as I was referring to aftermarket remotes.

The Cost Of Cartridge Filters Compared To Spin Ons

They are mounted right to the block in either case (canister or spin on) from the factory for passenger cars / light trucks. The aftermarket had (and still does) various remote offerings where you put an adapter plate on with an inlet and an outlet, then route the hoses to your remote location...

What are you working on today?

I removed the speedo cable core on the Impala and lubed it with graphite today. The speedo needle was starting to jitter a bit. All good now. Replaced a burned out #194 dash light as well while I was upside down under the dash.

The Cost Of Cartridge Filters Compared To Spin Ons

Everything in my fleet is now cartridge. I don't mind them at all. I pay about $7.50 cdn +s/h for my Impala cartridges (Wix), an equivalent spin on is about a dollar cheaper. There are no performance or heavy duty options in the old car filter space would be my only beef... but what manufacturer...

Oil Types, High Mileage Motor Oils, and Ideal Oil Change Intervals

This is exactly my take as well. The delta is about $1.20 / L ($.88 usd / 1.05 us.qt.) where I live (both on sale so apples to apples comparison) therefore I buy synthetic for everything now, old muscle and, of course, newer cars in my fleet - which actually require it. The gap seemed to close...

    gas or electric water heater

I have owned all 3 in my life. In order of preference: 1 - NG Tankless, this is what I currently have. Full disclosure, I have not had any issues with it so I am biased favourably towards it. This would change if it had expensive electronic issues. It is a complicated device, has a...

We went to the Salt Spring Island market last weekend. Some shots of the Impala on the ferry, bow and stern views. You can see a glimpse of Mt. Baker in one photo.

Do you have factory or aftermarket sound equipment in your vehicles?

Everything I own, and have owned, is factory. I like and appreciate aftermarket systems, just not in my vehicles.
