Grease / Anti-Seize - Replacing CV AXLE and would like to know best practice

I spent some time on another forum discussing this topic. Someone posted this video and it does make sense to me. Interesting.

Under the valve cover 2005 Buick 3800.

Yeah, Chilton manual states - "Install the right valve rocker arm cover bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)." So that's what I did.

Thanks for the tips! I'll check out the pan. (Yes, the pan area is coated with oil, maybe it??) The valve cover gaskets were replaced (by me) when I did the intake last year. I was meticulous with torque specs and time. Can't imagine they would be involved but.... one never knows.

Under the valve cover 2005 Buick 3800.

Awesome! I have a 2001 and expect to have it for some time. (only 67k miles). I changed-out everything that needed to be done. Pretty much everything from elbows to intake (NEW ATP) and plugs, wires, gaskets etc. Runs great. Lately, it has developed a small oil leak. (Still have not figured...

Grease / Anti-Seize - Replacing CV AXLE and would like to know best practice

So Yea' or Nay on the Anti-seize? I'm seeing about a 50/50 response from many.

Not many (if any) "conventional oil" these days. Almost all are a synthetic blend using modern refinery chemistry. Most of the difference is in the additive packages. In other words - The 3800 isn't finicky about oil or what grade. Obviously, you would want to use a decent oil, but expensive...

Grease / Anti-Seize - Replacing CV AXLE and would like to know best practice

Dang! That video was hard to watch! (Obviously, this is why I posted my question!) It appears some anti-seize used by the person in the beginning would have prevented this problem. That think was mated!!

Grease / Anti-Seize - Replacing CV AXLE and would like to know best practice

Appreciate all you responses Gentlemen! Thank you. Good info! I would agree it makes sense to use some form of anti-seize. Noting that, The splines really do not slide "In & out" in normal operation. I could see using grease if this were the case. From what I've learned, Anti-seize is a...

Under the valve cover 2005 Buick 3800.

I don't think anyone knows for sure. I believe by 2003 GM went to 5W-30. There's really not much difference (at room temps) between the two oils. Having noted that, if I lived in Wisconsin and the outside temps were below zero-degrees, I'd use the 5W. Otherwise, use whichever floats your...

Grease / Anti-Seize - Replacing CV AXLE and would like to know best practice

Makes sense! (Don't want to contaminate the ATF on the inner side.) Thanks for the nickel anti-seize tip. Any reason this is preferred over copper? Thanks!

That's good! I was referring to the common stuff - Plastic coolant Elbows, Intake gaskets, some other parts. Engine itself is wonderful.

I have a 2001 with the 3800. Fantastic engine. Yours looks great. I use 10W-30 all year here in AZ. I'm fairly certain these engines will last forever. It's the "other" parts connected that are the problem. Best engine GM ever made IMHO.

Grease / Anti-Seize - Replacing CV AXLE and would like to know best practice

I'm replacing a front CV Axle on my Buick LeSabre. I've read many posts and watched more than few YT videos. I've seen a few where the mechanic sprayed the hub/splines with a light coat of copper anti-seize. Some have also used grease. The install booklet (Yes, actually read that also)...

Does Anyone Have Healthcare Insurance Outside Of Work ?

Not to be negative, but this sure shows how absolutely crazy our healthcare system is... Feels like the insurance companies do everything they can to complicate things. It's interesting to know though... I always thought employers got special "deals" for their employees. Perhaps I am wrong.

    Buick LeSabre 315 K best oil/filter? A recent acquisition

Yup, The 3800 series engine is probably (along with GM's V8) one of the best engines ever made for reliability. ANY 10w-30 oil will work fine. Just keep it changed!

    Microgard Select - No Love?

I stand corrected Sir! Thank you for the link. Yes, louvers is the better term for what we are seeing in these filter tubes. Thank you.(y)

    Microgard Select - No Love?

Probably. But when I think of louvers, I think of them being movable. "Slats" seem stationary to me. I suppose it's more of an aviation term than anything. Ultimately, "holes" work better in my mind. :)

    Buick LeSabre 315 K best oil/filter? A recent acquisition

Thanks! I've got a 2001 with low miles (67k) and they went out about 10k ago. If anything, the engine is bulletproof. It's the smaller issues that cause problems. A LeSabre with 315k on the odometer should tell you something about the engine. If it were mine, I'd be looking at the entire car...

    Buick LeSabre 315 K best oil/filter? A recent acquisition

Those oil-pressure sensors go bad also. Change it out and see what the pressure is. (Easy to do and it's under the car.)
