    Highlander Oil Leak?

No problem, here's some pictures of what mine looks like for reference. The small cloth wrapped around the banjo fitting is there because I initially thought that was the source of my leak.

Starting car without hardly any oil in oil filter

My recommendation is to find a mobile mechanic to change out the oil filter for you. Obviously this is being done without the proper tools and skill level. Hell, I bet any craigslist mobile mechanic should be able to get that old filter off in less than 10 minutes (I'm thinking chisel and...

    Highlander Oil Leak?

I have the same situation happening on my '11 Sienna. The 2GR-FE is known to have problems with the timing cover leaking but to confirm the problem I added UV dye to my engine oil and cleaned up the area as best I could. It turns out that it is not my engine leaking oil but the inner CV boot...

    Cleaning parts without parts washer

if that is an oil pump I would open it up to make sure the insides are good and clean before reinstalling.

    Cleaning parts without parts washer

mineral spirits with a cleaning brush. personally I'd blast them with a pressure washer to save time. edit: nice thing about mineral spirits is you can collect it after it has been used and bottle it. Let it sit for a long while and most all the junk in it will settle out and you can pour off...

Where to check for cheapest smog test station & certificate in California

In my area I like to go to this local "drive-thru" smog place. They only do smog checks, no repairs, a single bay. You drive in one end and out the other. They seem to be the cheapest and quickest I could find where I live. If you could find a place like that in your area I think it would be...

2009 Mazda 5 - front wheel bearing - fearing splined drive axle was will be seized into hub

Looks like that joint has several punch marks to deform the metal around the opening to prevent the tripod joint from coming back out after assembly. Not very helpful in situations like this where you want to service the axle like you have.

    Sudden Subaru LCA Bushing Failure

I did a set of bushings not too long ago on a Subaru as well. Removing the arms from the car kicked my ass because one of the ball joints was severely rusted into the knuckle (I'm in CA too). I didn't replace the smaller bushings, I don't think they wear out like the larger ones do. Can't...

opinions on this Subaru timing belt?

the only markings I saw on the belt are the ones pictured, even if there is a date code there I wouldn't know how to decipher it. From what I understand subaru timing belts are also suppose to have timing marks on them to line up with timing marks on the cams and crank but I didn't see those...

opinions on this Subaru timing belt?

2008 WRX ~126k miles. This car was purchased used with no maintenance records but previous owner says the timing belt was replaced. I removed the left and right covers to take a look at the condition of the timing belt, can't trust that the job was done, right? So here it is, a genuine Subaru...

need to check the water level with this battery?

For anyone who is curious I washed the top of the battery off, dried it off and then unscrewed the caps with a large screwdriver. The caps ended up being far longer than what I thought they would be, they are basically tubes going down with an opening at the bottom and then a small whole in the...

need to check the water level with this battery?

This Duralast Gold battery came with a vehicle I purchase a little over a year and a half ago. Date on the battery is 2/2017. When I purchased the car I noted it was an Autozone battery but didn't think much about it. After having to replace a dead battery in my other vehicle I swapped the two...

External ATF filter cut open with pictures

Car is a '99 Camry 2.2L (112k mi) with a Derale external oil filter installed on the A140E trans. Using a Supertech ST16 filter for about 10k miles and 8 months and this is what it looks like. This is the first time I've cut open my oil filters and I'm guessing all the dark material that you can...

Massive amounts of PEA got into my oil ???

I have no information to add about your question but you say you have holes drilled into you intake manifold so you can spray the cleaner into the intake ports.... what do you do to seal the holes when you aren't cleaning the engine?

    GS430 Toyota WS transmission oil

An alternative if you can find it is Aisin WS. That is what I am using in my Toyota with a U660E transaxle. Aisin is a manufacturer of transmissions for many makes including Toyota (though maybe not all their transmissions). If Aisin is making some of the transmissions for Toyota that use Toyota...

    Is this rust a concern?

This is normal and not a real concern. For some reason (probably cost) they don't paint or coat the CV axle shaft or its inner and outer joints and they develop rust on the bare metal surface. This surface rust will never be an issue other than a cosmetic one.

What open end wrench are you using on brakes?

I considered ordering a cone wrench but then just bought a husky wrench at home depot and ground down the open end till it fit. Quick, easy and cheap.

time based timing belt change question

if your engine is an interference type where the valves and pistons can collide when the cam(s) and crank go out of sync then you should change it. Rubber degrades with age even if not being used (driven around). If there is no chance of the valves and pistons colliding then you could continue...
