    Classic Pontiac Owners

The 066 (code N) is a perfect grind for your use, gear ratio and car weight. I don't know of a current Melling equivalent, the MTP1 is a bit hotter. Alliance Cams and Wolverine used to have a 066 equivalent but those shops are long gone. The MTP1 is identical to the old TRW TP190, a very popular...

    Classic Pontiac Owners

Ex-owner here (see signature), my first car was a Pontiac and I have owned, raced (Division 6 NHRA) and restored a number of them for over 40 years. Why are you replacing all those items with, essentially, the same stock components? If they are worn out then fine, otherwise, you are not making...

    How to document oil changes

I keep my receipts. I also have a maintenance record (simple Excel spreadsheet) but that document isn't anything that is an airtight proof if a manufacturer really wanted to push back on a warranty. To be clear, I have never had a warranty issue on a new car that was anywhere near a possible...

Mother Nature and Father Time Clamps/ Limits

Had to give up the dirt bike, couldn't take the pounding any longer or the constant standing / sitting as you ride. Started at 14, oh well. Downhill skiing, started at 8 or so, also has been surrendered, it is just too hard on me to do it anymore. I keep active and busy on other less...

Cruise control broken on every vehicle I drive?

Not in my experience. On my very old cars that have had cruise control, they sometimes "hunted" around the set point and that was the worst thing that happened. Everything I have owned that is "modern" (my 1985 GMC) with cruise control has worked perfectly until the vehicle was sold. For me...

What is your standard OCI interval?

2017 Tacoma: FSM = 16,000kms (9920 miles) under normal service. I change every 15,000kms (9300 miles). 1967 Impala: FSM = 6,000 miles under normal service. I change every 6,000 miles and do not adhere to the FSM time limit (4 months) at all.

    Right vs. left fuelling

All of the square body GM trucks I have owned have had dual tanks so I got used to being an ambidextrous re-fueler a long time ago and it doesn't bother me either way. The only car I ever owned that was strictly passenger side was my TDI Jetta. My Impala fuels in the center as other classic car...

    retractable air hose reel recommendations

I have a Campbell Hausfeld that is 15 years old now and it still works great. The ratchet works excellent, rollers are all good, no leaks. It is all metal, I do see some new CH ones are plastic and I don't know how good / bad those are.

Why Did GM Route the Heater Return Hose to the Radiator on AT Equipped Trucks in the 70s-80s?

Ok, yes. 1 - That was done in the mid 70's on the truck line on automatic equipped trucks only as far as I recall. 2 - Functionally there is no difference in returning to the radiator nipple or the water pump. Many times replacement radiators did not have the nipple so you just routed the...

    Buick 401 Nailhead Oil

Ok, a couple notes: 1 - That series engine, unlike later Buick engines with the oil pump in the front aluminum timing cover, has a decent oil system. If you are not experiencing low oil pressure at idle and you drive "normal" 10w30 is what I would choose. If you think the engine is worn...

What is your current favorite oil filter to use?

Price is the #1 factor for me but I am always within the premium filter lines. I buy Fram Ultra or M1 filters for the Tacoma, whichever is cheaper at the time. The Impala I have little choice, it is the old style original canister / cartridge filter that was phased out ~54 years ago, so far I...

    Where do you grocery shop?

Costco gets most of our grocery business, probably 60%-70%. The rest is with local independent grocery shops and specialty shops eg. bakery, butcher etc. A few things we get at Walmart eg. Coca Cola and some canned goods.

Guitar and Page / Zeppelin fans will hopefully enjoy this video, I certainly did.

What are you working on today?

Yes for sure. At least there wasn't an evaporator core / POA valve etc. in the way on mine. I am glad it is done and, most of all, glad I did it and was careful.

Does this seem like a bargain?

A book time of 1.5 for both those services seems reasonable to me. Book time for an OLF (oil, lube and filter) at the garage I worked at in the late 70's early 80's was .75 and a rotation like that was a flat rate of $4. I wouldn't do that service pictured for less than 1.5 if it were me. It...

What are you working on today?

Just finished a heater blower motor and heater core on the Impala. The motor was getting really noisy and the core was 57 years old. It is a horrible job, you need to remove the inner fender to replace the blower motor and access one of the heater core box nuts. Hood is off, outer fender and rad...

    Rerefined motor oil?

I have used re-refined oil before and I would have no issues using it in the future. It just comes down to cost for me. The re-refined product would need to be discounted beyond what I can buy brand new M1 / PUP on sale with rebates etc. for and that might not be possible.

    Do You Garden?

Gardening is my wife's major hobby and passion. She grows; potatoes (numerous varieties), garlic (numerous varieties), tomatoes (numerous varieties), green peppers, hot peppers (jalapeno, habanero, ghost and she did a crop of reapers one year), onions, peas, asparagus, raspberries, strawberries...

Used oil disposal in other countries

Used engine oil is re-refined in both provinces I have lived in (Alberta and BC). There have always been convenient depots I take my oil to, it is very easy and there are no fees. I go roughly every 2 years.

Best value on Full Syn motor oil

This has always worked for me and I have never fretted about it. I have always bought whatever reputable oil is on sale that meets the vehicle specs. The sale price is what decides the brand I buy. Where I live, that generally means either M1 or PUP, they are always on sale at some point in a...
