4th gen Toyota Sienna ATF change

I’m surprised Toyota didn’t call for e-Transaxle Fluid TE in the new Sienna. I changed some out at 35K on a Camry recently. I use WS or Valvoline Hybrid in those if it doesn’t call for that super special fluid. My gen 2 Prius saw it all - MaxLife, WS, Vavoline Hybrid. It’s not picky at all.

What aftermarket keyfobs are reliable for Toyota?

You can buy “virginized” used/refurb key fobs on eBay. I have one in my possession for a 4th gen Prius(ID 14FBC). I’ll report back when I get the chance the program it into the car. If you have an Autel or XHorse key tool, it can “virginize” the fob and clear it for reprogramming into the car...

Hertz will scan your rental return with AI

I usually never rent a car in my travels… if there’s good, usable public transit or if I have access to a car. Last time I rented one, Hertz at LA Union Station, it was $120/day. All inclusive. Renting cars legit scares me with an agent trying to ding me.

What are you working on today?

Turned out the Subaru I worked on last weekend needed plugs too. I was doomscrolling and expecting the worst. The friend got a quote for $450 to change them. She instead got the plugs and texted me. Swapped them out tonight. The Tone PG86 spark plug socket set is a lifesaver on these. Took me...

    Best Aftermarket Steering/Suspension Component Brand???

They all aren’t great compared to OE. I’d gamble with Delphi, 555, or even play the Moog lottery. But in this case, it might be better to hit up the FLAPS(not the parts house) and get whatever has a “lifetime warranty”.

2009 Camry 2AZ-FE with 90k miles was flushed with green coolant

Cost. My local dealer uses Peak Full Force or Prestone Prime for all out of warranty and used cars.

    Post your latest oil change

Yea, I have a friend in a similar situation. She has a 14 mile round trip commute but doesn’t use her car in town. I’m going to suggest M1 for a slightly more robust oil at the next OCI.

    Control arms, OEM vs aftermarket

Ah. My mistake. I’m too used to the Toyota/Subaru world where a ball joint is included with the arm if it’s an aftermarket one. Exceptions if it’s OE or a truck.

    Control arms, OEM vs aftermarket

Weird, most of the aftermarket options for Japanese cars include them. I refuse to install them.

Brake lines for a old truck?

We’re going to order that brake line kit. Spendy but it’s all preformed to keep the fuss down.

Horrible brakes on these 2nd gen dodge diesels

I’ve read the 10” drums on the 1500 GMT400 trucks weren’t great. The 11” brakes were better.

2009 Camry 2AZ-FE with 90k miles was flushed with green coolant

Prestone looks like a green but with a bit of a yellow undertone. There is no way to find out. Flush and refill with the right stuff. I tell people what coolant has been used for future reference.

    Control arms, OEM vs aftermarket

The bushing will be the biggest difference as well as ball joints.

Brake lines for a old truck?

The truck is in the Bay Area in a cool microclimate near San Francisco Bay. While it’s not going to Tahoe or the Sierras, there’s rust on the lines. If the friend won’t spring for the kit, I’ll have him order just the rear lines, I’ll get pre-flared lines and form them for the rest.

What's good, and not so good, in brake pads these days?

I think Powerstop was the former Lucas Autospecialty division. I’m installing their shoes on an old Chevy truck that has been sitting out for a while with leaky wheel cylinders. Anything has to be better than the old Kragen shoes in it now. I think Powerstop is a bit of a gimmick. As much as I...

post your latest differential fluid change

2021 Subaru Forester, 65K Out: OEM Idemitsu or Eneos fill In: Valvoline synthetic with a little M1 75W-90 since I ran out and lost some to spillage. No need to go fancy, owner of this car rides a bike everywhere in SF/Oakland and only has this for work and road trips. She giggled at the sight...

What are you working on today?

I did a 60K service on a friend’s 2021 Subaru Forester. She bought most of the supplies - MicroGuard filters, O’Reilly house brand oil. I bought gear oil, wipers, and a jug of Prestone blue to top off the reservoir. She’s taking it to the dealer for an alignment and I told her to have the CVT...
