Solar eating its own lunch in ERCOT

Yes. US nuclear units are baseloaded only. The single nuclear facility that was in my old control area couldn't even be called on for reactive support (similar to the PV & Wind stations). They were able to withstand loss of 230kV offsite power for some time (can't disclose the duration). Due...

Solar eating its own lunch in ERCOT

It’s not that rare of an event in WECC. I’ve had more than my share of pseudo gen load drop dispatches over the last few years. Have lost a couple generators during excursions as well. Lost as in trip, not damaged.

From the ramp rates I’ve seen, even the new nukes lag pretty far behind hydro stations in ramp rates. Heck, I have stations that can ramp a couple hundred mw/min. Also, Hz excursions damage the low pressure turbine blades in steam turbines. Large units have very long blades making them much...

I get the sentiment here but there are very good reasons to have a diverse generation portfolio. Hydro & CT’s offer blackstart capabilities, quicker ramping for Hz control & better “ride through” during Hz excursions. That said, for nuclear to be such a small portion of our portfolio is a crime

There are a few different types of combustion turbines available for dispatch. Aero derivatives like the GE LM series. These are very quick ramping units & can be found in both simple & combined cycle facilities. HD type units like the GE Frame series can also be found in both simple &...

Things in utilities are different. We consider certain regulations as law since mandatory fines & jail time can be associated with certain things. Not just company fines but operator can be liable for jail time & fines as well. My DOE417 reporting criteria comes to mind with that one. Mandatory...

I’ll have to look into that when I get back to work. During training sessions, it’s still taught that recycling is illegal/prohibited. There may still be something on the books about it under DOE or NRC.

It was banned in 1977 with the current storage policy act being enacted in 1982(ish) I believe. I could have the years wrong but around that time frame. Specifically, waste rods from generation stations can’t be recycled due to concerns of weapons grade materials

Hey, there’s plenty I don’t understand about why certain decisions are made as well & I operate part of the darn grid 🤷🏻‍♂️ There’s plenty that can be done to improve reliability. In all honesty we’re just not going in that direction, at least in CA. Certain energy sources are sold to the...

    Legalize nuclear recycling, just saying.

In CA, many PV stations are contracted to the state at $65-75/mWh even during negative pricing periods. Some are used as price offsets for the state run water project. The ending statement about cost to end users being higher is correct. Just look at the CPUC approved rates by the 3 large public...

A visit to Simonian Farms, Fresno CA

Grew up in Selma (just a bit south of there). Family owned a few ranches & a local water pump company so did plenty of work all around that area. There, at least used to be, a dive bar just down Clovis Ave(think American was the x street) from where you're at that a friend & I would play pool...

    Amsoil SS 5w-30 15.5k; 2016 F150 3.5 88k

Didn't @Crusher mention the addition of a catch can between OCI 2 & 3? I'm unsure how a CC will help fuel dilution but that was th eonly stated difference in the OP. Possibly additional highway usage prior to taking the sample?

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

Do the same on the 6F35 in my wife's Fusion. Putting a PPE pan on my F150 (as well as an external spin on filter & dipstick kit) so I can do the same with it.

No pics as I forgot my phone. Actually great to be separated from the electronic ball & chain for a few hours. Had a Tatuaje 10yr Sumatra & a DT&T sombressa (sp?) with neighbors. Now I have a buzz from the 4 beers & have a training day at work tomorrow I don’t really feel like going to
