Increasing coolant concentration to raise coolant temp?

The thermostat determines the minimum operating temperature and the fan, either mechanical or electric, determines the maximum operating temperature. If your engine is running cool it doesn't mater what the fan or radiator is doing....ZERO coolant should be flowing to it as the thermostat keeps...

    Older Tires...Perfect Shape...What to do?

@fdcg27 and others...I feel obligated to share the story behind this 4Runner. My father is a recently retired mechanic and had his own shop for about 40 years. He grabbed this 4Runner for me in 1999 to be a winter beater and to get me back and forth from college and got it for almost free...

    Older Tires...Perfect Shape...What to do?

@JimPghPA Agreed. These are 31" tires on 15" rims. A roll-over would not be fun....and is the reason I'm asking these questions! (y) @TPK No cracks, not one. Still soft-ish and flexible. Plenty of traction. These tires (and 4Runner since I fixed it up) have been in the garage their whole...

need 4x4 for Daily Commute and Light Off-Roading

@Venkat When I think off-roading I think Jeep Wranglers crawling over big rocks and digging through mud. Since you live in snow country I'd think anything with AWD or 4WD would be great obviously, but some ground clearance would be most beneficial. As others have said a Subaru Forester or...

    Older Tires...Perfect Shape...What to do?

Which is why I'm here asking :) I've heard this 10 year rule of thumb before (sometimes I've even heard 6 years). Is this just a general consensus/opinion or is this an actual law? If the tires had legal tread and the vehicle passed its yearly inspection...how would 99.9% of the population...

Where to find a 10 psi radiator cap?

So I went to RockAuto for you and indeed the OEM cap is 16psi. Motorad lists their 16psi version as T16V....for 16psi. Guess what happened when I went to google and searched "Motorad T10V"????? Rockauto has it. Link here. And also...you have to be smarter than the parts store computer. If...

    Older Tires...Perfect Shape...What to do?

Believe it or not these are becoming collectibles. Obviously not a classic muscle car or German import....these old Toyotas just don't exist anymore. The salt ate most of them and time took the rest. Ones in good condition regularly sell for $20k+ on Bringatrailer.com and the best examples in...

need 4x4 for Daily Commute and Light Off-Roading

When you say "light off road trails", what exactly do you have in mind? Somewhat well maintained fire roads, not-so-well maintained gravel and dirt roads? Or are we talking about crawling over small logs and rocks while truly off road?

    2 bottles of Redline SL1

Won't hurt. But to be honest I'm not sure everyone buys into the "Top Tier" fuels anyways. All fuel is required to have a certain amount additives. Do the Top Tier gasolines really have the "Ultra Nitro Plus Super Mega Power" additives? Or do they just have what is required and call them...

Brake rotors - how much are you paying to machine them?

Well lets think about this...that is $70 to turn a pair of rotors. That is about 0.3-0.5 hours of labor depending on the shops labor rate. I'd say that is pretty good since it will probably take a half hour from start to finish for the rotors to get turned. Most shops will charge an hour...

    Mobil 1 Classic 10w30 (High-Zinc Formula)

Side note....it is crazy what oil is going for at the box stores. Lots of $10.99-$11.99's there. Walmart is starting to catch up too. BTW....6 quarts of Mobil1 EP 5W-30 goes for about $50 shipped from RockAuto :) I was just at Autozone this weekend to get some oil for the snowblower...

Is 112k miles too high mileage for a Transmission service?

Considering it only takes 3.5 quarts....I'd keep going every 3k miles until the fluid looks fresh. Then maybe a 15k just to check on it and if things look fine....30k intervals.

    Older Tires...Perfect Shape...What to do?

Thanks for the quick responses! The 4Runner is just a pleasure car for scenic drives and trips to for Ice Cream with the kids. It will NEVER see snow/ice again but I may be caught in some rain occasionally. Probably 2-3k miles per year, tops. Doesn't seem to have any degraded performance in...

    Older Tires...Perfect Shape...What to do?

I restored my 1987 Toyota 4Runner back in 2012. It has become a garage queen since for pleasure cruises with the kids. I drove it for about 5k miles in 2012-2014 and then it stayed off the road until this year. The Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires have a total of about 7k miles on them...

Drivers in 70+ Age Group Safer Than 35-54 Age Group

Well since we are reviving 3+ year old threads I'll share a story. 8 years ago I got a 2004 Ford Expedition with 60k miles on if for CHEAP. My neighbors mother (late 70's?) had knocked her pocket book off of the center console where she kept it and onto the passenger footwell. So naturally...

Any Real evidence for Stabil 360 Marine?

Don't be afraid of over-dosing. Sta-bil even says that there is no consequence to it...aside from perhaps a financial penalty. I typically use 2-3x whatever they say just because, but I'm buying a quart bottle and it lasts me a year. I just pulled my old log splitter out of the woods that has...

With these new transmissions that have the tedious leveling and temp requirements for fluid level checks

When the transmission is level. Sometimes the drivetrain doesn't line up with the body lines. But in general....close enough should be fine. I just eyeball it. And I do miss the drainplug and dipstick option.

Advance Auto Parts to close 700+ stores.

Same here with AutoZone AND Advanced. They want them back in the original containers....and I've been asked for a receipt to prove I bought the oil from them! They used to have a big dumping bin you could just walk over to and dump your oil but now they want you to leave the containers so they...

RAYBESTOS Element 3 coated rotors or ...

I just bought and installed a Raybestos front pad/rotor kit from Rockauto for my 2021 GMC Canyon, the price was too good to pass up. Included the Element3 coated rotors and the R-Line ceramic brake pads. This replaced the OEM brake rotors and pads. I like the rotors but I'm not a big fan of...

Rislone Engine Treatment - Smells like Strong Chemicals

Not yet but I'm thinking about it. My wifes 2016 Mazda CX-5 goes through about a quart every 2-3k miles. I've done a B12 piston soak and am currently running a quart of HPL's EC30 engine cleaner in with some synthetic oil for about 3k. I plan to change and inspect the oil filter at 1,000 miles...
