Does the oil brand actually matter? Is this all just hyperbole?

In my opinion, regarding extending OCI’s and oil brand…it’s 70% engine design, 20% your driving commute/tendencies, and 10% the actual oil you use. Something like that ^^^, give or take 10% between engine and commute. I just feel the oils are very similar right now with formulations/base...

When does a car “age out” for long distance road trips?

True, a broken shackle at a spring is just as bad as any other time (and dangerous). Same with a rotted subframe that supports a control arm up front, just as dangerous. But to have your entire family in the car 300 plus miles from home when it happens, seems a little worse to me. But perhaps...

The main reason I change oil at 3000 miles...sludge!

Yeah, totally disagree. And I swear to god if I ever hear someone mention again how a “Nissan Engineer that developed the GTR engine suggests 3,000 mile oil changes”, I’m going to eat a half gallon of Greek yogurt, and force myself to watch Taylor Swift videos of her hugging and playing kissy...

Post a photo of your oil on dipstick (with miles)

Amsoil Signature Series 5W30 at 6,000 miles. Oil looks much much darker than the Mobil1 I’ll usually run to 10,000 miles. And it turned darker much quicker. Changed the filter out at 6,000 miles and topped up, cut the filter open…there’s nothing in there of any consequence…no sludge, carbon...

    Low tension rings

That’s been my experience, yes. Everything is just A OK until all the sudden, uh oh. For me it’s been around 115,000-120,00 miles, then boom. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be that way for you or anyone else, but oil burners are a thing, and unfortunately rings have played a roll in it...

When does a car “age out” for long distance road trips?

It’s such a hard question to answer with a definitive answer, but some factors are vehicle age, condition and mileage (obviously). I say age, because age means rust/damage/danger, for some of us living in certain parts of the country. A fifteen year old vehicle in the rust belt that hasn’t been...

QSFS at 5k OCI or HPL PCMO at 10k OCI?

I think this is something some of us debate internally with quite a bit (at least I do)…should I extend to 10,000 miles using a boutique oil? Or should I just stick to 5,000 mile intervals using an off the shelf lower priced synthetic? Why not try both? I have, and I don’t regret it. Truth is...

How much does oil viscosity really change mpg?

I have not noticed any sort of measurable difference in the two different vehicles I’ve tried it on, then again I only went from a 0W20 to a 5W30…one was in a V6, the other a V8. MPG stayed the same (from what I could see).

GDI Engine Owners - What Oil ?

With GDI I don’t suggest anything more than a 5k mile OCI. Now, has GDI improved? On some brands, yes, on others? Not enough. Bottom line, know your vehicle…know how much oil it consumes, how much fuel dilution, your driving tendencies, and get a thorough idea of all this^^ while checking your...

    0W20 at Dealership, Toyota

I think if you did a poll on here comparing the folks that go 10,000 vs the folks that do 5,000…5,000 would be the vast majority. IMO I think you bring up a good point though...people/customers don’t pay attention to it/don’t care. To hear they can change it at 10,000 miles is music to their...

    0W20 at Dealership, Toyota

Honestly, I don’t think many people are wrapped up in the 10,000 mile oil change interval segment. I’d say it‘s 70/30 in favor of shorter intervals. Some dealers are not adhering to 10,000 mile intervals anyway - some are now suggesting 7,500 - they are open to telling you the recommended...

Under valve cover & sump pictures - 2014 Dodge Durango 174,000 miles total, 34,000 miles on HPL HDEO 5w-20

Previously 5,000 using whatever synthetic on sale, then 10,000 using Mobil1 EP…now? Well I’m not sure, depends on if I chicken out, but I was thinking 15,000.

Under valve cover & sump pictures - 2014 Dodge Durango 174,000 miles total, 34,000 miles on HPL HDEO 5w-20

I’ve got to say…I’m 5,000 miles in on a Amsoil Signature Series run…and you’re motivating me to push the oil to distances I’ve never considered before. And I hate you for that🤣🤣. As an ASE tech, you’re ruining my reputation. People at work are beginning to talk…I’ll just direct them here. One...

Toyota 4 Cylinder Turbo Low Compression

If you’re sure it’s rings - and it sounds like you are - I’d venture to guess it’s ”just” a stuck ring (or two). And unfortunately that can be a challenge. I’d ask myself, am I going to damage the cylinder wall be driving in? Because actually driving it might help, with your piston soaks...

2008 CRV 2.4L PCV valve thread sealer?

Thanks, I figured it was plastic, thanks for letting me know. As for the repairs at the dealer totaling $400. That’s not a totally terrible price. To get those tires balanced properly, and not have someone do it wrong (and have to bring it back) is well worth the $49.95, that’s a good deal. To...

    Belt, hose longevity question

Regarding belts…visual inspection usually offers nothing nowadays, you’d have to put a gauge on it between the ribs and measure the wear. These things don’t crack like they use to. However I think you can easily get 100,000 out of them. I’ve gotten more - but to be safe I’d change them out at...

High miles with no Coolant / ATF or other maintenance

Unfortunately this is what you get when buying used cars in that mileage range. It sucks. I’d say coolant is the number one neglected fluid in all used cars today. Long life coolant has made it so the typical new car buyer never changes the fluid, then trades it in at 70,000 miles, where a lot...

2008 CRV 2.4L PCV valve thread sealer?

Like others said, whatever you use/do, I wouldn’t over do it. It’s plastic and you could crack it, more so when you remove it next time (if you ever do). My daughter has the same year CRV, thing has been absolutely flawless. Close to 200,000 miles now and (knock on wood) no out of pocket...

    Oil Info Overload 0W-20

Honestly, like everyone said, if you’re doing 5,000 mile intervals any oil that meets the specifications will do great in that Lexus. I’d simply shop around for sales and rebates (they’re few and far between nowadays), or you could just buy the house brand stuff (Amazon Basics, Kirkland, Super...
