“The mother of all breaches”-Malwarebytes Offering Free Identity Scan

Email address is all. It's really too bad there isn't a comically simple way to ascertain the nature of some of these organizations. Does Apple have ALL of your information such that they can check to see if any of it is on the "dark web"? I wonder how many 3rd parties have access to their...

“The mother of all breaches”-Malwarebytes Offering Free Identity Scan

This has been my go-to for years and years to monitor if my email address(es) appear in any of these disclosures: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

    Weather Related School Closures

SW Ontario, Canada here. I am pretty sure our school buses are immortal and bus drivers' veins filled with the same ice they are navigating over. There has not been one day yet cancelled due to anything. In fact, my two teenage daughters have been waiting for the bus each morning in -16C...

    Anyone Install ReactOS?

?!?!?!?!?!! The entire world runs on Linux. This very web site. Chromebooks, Android, very likely your router or smart toaster or whatever in the world you have hooked up to your WiFi. Your Amazon Firestick. All 500 of the world's fastest supercomputers. Your bank runs on a UNIX of some sort...

    Are they doomed?

Here is the database of Critical Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) for Windows 7. As of this writing there are 2,369 of them. None require your clicking on anything and none are getting patched...

    Are they doomed?

All of my efforts to educate users behind keyboards start with "make sure your OS is always updated and supported"; then go on to explain that system vulnerabilities have nothing to do with their operations or interactions with their computers: That is mostly the province of viruses and their...

    Are they doomed?

Very, very, very easy answer: Bots attack you. And they are all loaded up with information about EVERY 0-day and unpatched vulnerability just scouring the internet, jigglin' those door knobs and window handles just waiting find someone with an attitude like this: There is a self-fulfilling...

    Are they doomed?

I don't recall having BitLocker to be a determinant factor in Win11 upgrade eligibility because versions of Windows do not come with it at all. My understanding is/was that among the criteria were a TPM v2.0 chip on the motherboard (... In which case there is a registry hack floating around out...

    Are they doomed?

Do you expect those who exploit your unsupported system to leave you a pretty note?! Very literally, every single one of us on this forum who makes a living in IT in any way, shape or form speaks with unambiguous solidarity that it is **extremely unwise** to run an unsupported OS. It is harmful...

    Are they doomed?

As others have noted, support for (updated installations of) Win10 lasts until Oct of 2025, as per the horse's mouth: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro There might be some type of limited security support beyond that, depending on customer adoption of...

Edge and The Dogs Of Amazon

You are correct: I have no idea why Microsoft did not just rename the thing; but Edge was supposed to replace IE. After some time they decided to just use Chromium - already at the time nearing ubiquitous use in Chrome and others - as a base instead of reinventing the wheel. So now Edge is a...

Edge and The Dogs Of Amazon

I'd bet that it's a cookie/cache issue in the browser. Maybe clear the browser data for that site. Win7 is unsupported and it is extremely unwise to continue using it; especially when conducting transactions.

Cookies (not the kind you bake)

Cookies are very small pieces of data left on your computer by a web site. In the instance of this web site, for example, there may be a cookie left on your computer that, when you next visit BITOG, tells the server who you are and when you last logged in: If the server has a policy of making...

    stuck "\" key?

No. This is mostly incorrect. Security vulnerabilities have absolutely zero to do with viruses in the way they intrude on your system. A virus is literally just a normal application that does stuff you do not want, done without your knowledge or consent; but still instantiated by you (i.e...

    stuck "\" key?

When an OS is unsupported it does NOT receive security patches for **newly-discovered** vulnerabilities. This is very, very, very unwise.

How and when do you pay your property taxes?

Our municipality offers for us to consent to have the funds automatically withdrawn from our back, which we do. We get something in the mail yearly with a summary and details. EDIT: Spelling error, which I am keeping because it is one of the best unintentionally awesome spelling errors I've...

    Getting rid of Windows 11

What is a "free" OS? Who pays what? And how? I use a "free" OS that is free in both "freedom" and "no cost" standpoints. It's been orders of magnitude easier, more private, more secure, more stable than non-free varieties. I even make my living using that same OS to power my servers. All I see...

    Getting rid of Windows 11

And the data was probably recoverable. I've seen many system whose OS have become inoperable but the data is easily recoverable simply by placing the SSD/HDD in another system and mounting it, presuming the SSD/HDD was not encrypted.
