    2014 BMW X3 Brake/Rotor Recommendation

    Galfer on the car side is owned by Conti under the ATE brand. For bikes, they’re independent. If it was me, Zimmermann/ATE or OEM rotors, and Pagid/Textar/ATE pad. Some aftermarket might be OK - I would consider Bosch to be OK. Wagner will source from Ferodo instead of their US/Mexican plants...

    2009 Camry 2AZ-FE with 90k miles was flushed with green coolant

    And pink crust was common on Toyotas when they switched to pink from red. While 2-EHA has proven to be aggressive on silicone and nylon, I think if the gaskets and sealant was designed for Dex-Cool, 2-EHA isn’t as bad as it seems. FKM is best to seal with carboxylic acids(like sebacic/benzoic...

    2009 Camry 2AZ-FE with 90k miles was flushed with green coolant

    And funny enough, Prestone added silicate to protect aluminum - but the Japanese found phosphate was much better at passivating Al than silicate was. Mercedes is a big fan of silicate but in lower doses in combination with an organic acid and borate as the original G-05 coolant they used...

    2009 Camry 2AZ-FE with 90k miles was flushed with green coolant

    Funny enough, Volvo is starting to use a SiPHOAT coolant called G-64(BASF’s code name), and old school “low silicate”(not Prestone) green mixed with an SCA worked OK in diesels.

    Brake fluid refresh?

    Maybe if the car uses a brake-by-wire system with an accumulator or an older ATE/Bendix ABS system with an integral power booster - also with an accumulator. Toyota trucks that don’t use a vacuum booster use a similar brake actuator as a Prius or hybrid version of the Camry/Highlander/RAV4...

    Raybestos=napa=delco gold?

    The numbering system. AutoZone and O’Reilly uses the Bendix numbering system for their “basic” brake pads - MKD906 for example. But go with Duralast Gold or BrakeBest Select it’s DG906 or SC906. It’s like filters using the Fram, Purolator, Champ or Wix numbering. IIRC, FMSI does have...

    Do gas chainsaws make any sense for a homeowner?

    IMO, for the suburban homeowner, no. Maybe if you lived on a rural plot of land where felling/pruning trees for fire mitigation is a fact of life. Even battery powered is overkill. We have an Ego for a project but it’s going to waste. Renting makes sense for the average homeowner.

    Raybestos=napa=delco gold?

    BPI(First Brands) is a long time Napa partner. And they also work with GM SPO. There was a time when Raybestos ruled the aftermarket - they had a contract with Kragen before the O’Reilly merger and parts houses stocked them. Not anymore. MAT Holdings supplies all the parts stores(AutoZone also...

    What's good, and not so good, in brake pads these days?

    FDP friction also makes friction in China. They are the supplier for AAP’s Carquest Red pads. Wouldn’t be shocked if regular Duralast and BrakeBest are made by them but with a different edge code.

    What's good, and not so good, in brake pads these days?

    I meant to say for Euro applications. Wagner was proud to boast all their pads for Euro applications were ECE90. Their pads for American/Japanese/Korean cars are still made in the US or Mexico. IME, they’re hit or miss. Had luck with ThermoQuiets on a Subaru. But they make clunking noises on...

    Subaru now extending CVT warranty on nearly all 2019-2020 models now

    Honda is a similar story too. I wanted to change the CVTF on a friend’s 2021 Forester but I told her let the dealer do it. The fill bolt was next to the rear cat, and it filled up like a Toyota 6/8 speed - but this makes the U660E/A761E in the Camry/Sienna/Highlander/RAV4, Tacoma/Tundra and...

    Capri and Icon beat Snap on

    This is really starting to remind me of scuba gear. There is a similar debate in the scuba community about Scubapro - which is considered by many(who aren’t “tech” divers with a GUE/TDI certification, Halcyon is the darling there) to be the best(if you stick to their higher-end lines) but also...

    What's good, and not so good, in brake pads these days?

    Driv owns Ferodo along with the former European Honeywell friction brands(Jurid and Bendix Europe). It seems like from this shot and when the local parts house sold Wagner, they imported Ferodo and reboxed them as QuickStop/QS(which Driv also packaged for Federated Auto Parts affliates as the...

    4th gen Toyota Sienna ATF change

    I’m surprised Toyota didn’t call for e-Transaxle Fluid TE in the new Sienna. I changed some out at 35K on a Camry recently. I use WS or Valvoline Hybrid in those if it doesn’t call for that super special fluid. My gen 2 Prius saw it all - MaxLife, WS, Vavoline Hybrid. It’s not picky at all.

    What aftermarket keyfobs are reliable for Toyota?

    You can buy “virginized” used/refurb key fobs on eBay. I have one in my possession for a 4th gen Prius(ID 14FBC). I’ll report back when I get the chance the program it into the car. If you have an Autel or XHorse key tool, it can “virginize” the fob and clear it for reprogramming into the car...

    Hertz will scan your rental return with AI

    I usually never rent a car in my travels… if there’s good, usable public transit or if I have access to a car. Last time I rented one, Hertz at LA Union Station, it was $120/day. All inclusive. Renting cars legit scares me with an agent trying to ding me.

    What are you working on today?

    Turned out the Subaru I worked on last weekend needed plugs too. I was doomscrolling and expecting the worst. The friend got a quote for $450 to change them. She instead got the plugs and texted me. Swapped them out tonight. The Tone PG86 spark plug socket set is a lifesaver on these. Took me...

    Best Aftermarket Steering/Suspension Component Brand???

    They all aren’t great compared to OE. I’d gamble with Delphi, 555, or even play the Moog lottery. But in this case, it might be better to hit up the FLAPS(not the parts house) and get whatever has a “lifetime warranty”.

    2009 Camry 2AZ-FE with 90k miles was flushed with green coolant

    Cost. My local dealer uses Peak Full Force or Prestone Prime for all out of warranty and used cars.
