New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

That's a good question imo. The TOTAL weight removed was 6 grams. That's just slightly less than what a quarter weighs. I took amounts from different locations on the piston. There was no manual to tell exactly how to do this so it's mostly just intuitive. I doubt that removing 6 grams in a...

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

Fer shur. You are very keen to have picked up on that. No one else did. The one im installing is only 439grams. ALL the rest are 445grams. Odd, right? it's magic I tell ya.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

All the pistons in the new set were the same weight within 1g. All but one was 445g like the one I lightened. All the wrist pins were the same weight. Replacing them all was not chosen since the compression on the rest is great and the wear on the cylinder bore on the one I check was well...

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

How does it look? Can you explain what you mean? Every measurement I took showed a very healthy motor with very little wear. I don't ever recall hearing of a wrist pin failure in a less than 5k rpm, 200hp motor? I would personally feel that there is no risk reusing the old wrist pin. If you...

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

If that assertion were true, every vehicle could have different weights for each crankshaft, each rod and each piston. This would make rebuilding or even repairing (much less manufacturing replacement parts) a nightmare. As you can clearly see here, the weight is indeed specified at the piston...

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

My problem with the EngineTech brand set of pistons is that they do not comply with the published weight limits for their replacement pistons. Their original weight is 445g - 2g over manufacturer limits. A very small amount, but precision is the difference between amateur engine building and...

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

In the Factory Service Manual for this engine, it is clearly listed as well as limits. I was able to reduce the new piston weight to 439g. Unfortunately, the new wrist pin made the problem worse because it was 6g heavier than the original. I used the lighter original wrist pin.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

I wasn't sure so I duplicated the hole on the new piston. The amount removed to drill that hole was about 1/10 of a gram.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

Yes sir. Using original wrist pin due to new wrist pin being 6 grams heavier. Exact same length. Thanks for the assist (y)

Dodge Grand Caravan 1999 - 3.8L low compression on one cylinder

So, today I got the piston and rod back together. After heating the rod end and chilling the wrist pin it went in smooth as silk no issues.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

For anyone facing this situation........ I ended up buying a set of rasps for my dremel tool and was able to shed 6 total grams off the piston. Hopefully I did not compromise the integrity of the piston. Only time will tell. I doubt that I did and just used common sense in where I removed...

    Cordless Tool Batteries

Just because it says Dewalt, Makita or whatever on the outside doesn't automatically make it better. Do you think this is top quality, top of the line materials and craftsmanship inside?

    Cordless Tool Batteries

That's odd. I was pretty sure it was Matco then Snap-On. You got a reputable link to back that up? Always open to learning something new.

Oil Priming an engine before first run

Chrysler 3.8L V6. Subject engine has had head off, oil pan off and one rod and piston removed for over a month. Before putting the motor back together, I want to clean it inside. I will probably use Kerosene or Diesel fuel just to help remove any contaminants that may have found their way...

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

I guess I'm more concerned about the vibrations felt in the drivers seat of by the engine crankshaft and it's bearings. It's very difficult to imagine the stresses.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

Right. Did you see the line in that link you posted about the radial force of an unbalanced piston? Wow! 5grams or so equating to hundreds of pounds of radial force at rpm's.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

Ok, I read that entire thread. there's no way I'm going to modify the crankshaft, still installed in the engine. I would modify the piston and wrist pin long before I even considered that. As far as the out of balance. I may work to get 2 more grams off the piston then go with it. The...

Absolutely. But I'm not touching the crankshaft.

New Piston Heavier Than Original Piston

Anyone ever had a wrist pin bored out to decrease weight? The Factory Service Manual calls for 433g min to 443g max (just the piston alone) My piston started at 446g and I got it down to 443g. The Original Piston weighed 434g with a wrist pin weight of 134g The new piston is still 9grams...
