Thermostat opinions - Lower Set point for Summer

The fans are cycling exactly as prescribed in the factory service manual. I try it with and without AC. it does run a bit cooler with the AC off....or more correctly I should say.....it takes longer for the fans to cycle when the AC is off. it has a new AC pressure switch, New thermostat...

Thermostat opinions - Lower Set point for Summer

It's not running "hot" according to the factory service manual. In fact, it runs about exactly where the factory service manual says. But the factory service manual calls for fans to kick on LOW MODE at 224F and to me that just feels too hot. And I have several of this exact same vehicle...

Thermostat opinions - Lower Set point for Summer

Thanks football. In this case, the vehicle has a new radiator and the condenser and radiator were carefully cleaned recently. Also, the coolant is fresh and there is no sign of any sludge or contamination in the cooling system. It is maintained with great care. As far as the fans, the fan...

Thermostat opinions - Lower Set point for Summer

Got a Dodge minivan. Factory Thermostat = 195F Current thermostat = 195F Runs a bit warm in the Summer only when sitting still on very hot days in traffic or at long red lights etc. When moving it seems to do fine. Sitting still in traffic Max temp = 224F-228F (fans kick on, temp drops back to...

    Castrol vs Valvoline

Castrol always seemed to keep my engines internally clean during the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000's I was always specifically impressed with that about Castrol. VRP seems to be the next level for cleaning. That said, I recently decided to try Delo XSP 15w-40 in one of my 1999 minivans. Seems to have...

CasterOil always cleared me out good. So I trust it'll do the same for your cars.

Noco Genius5 charger - Reverse polarity issue

I bought 5 of these (NOCO Genius 5A chargers) and yet another has just failed. That's now 2 out of 5. All of them are less than 7 months old. $80 each. Someone in their infinite wisdom will of course chime in to tell me 1000 ways I messed up. Screw them. I KNOW how to use a battery charger...

    Water Wetter

Follow Up....I may have to say "Uncle"..... So after a bit more testing and dumping coolant and refilling with mostly distilled water and half a bottle of Risoline Super coolant I have to say I'm no longer sure if this stuff does anything. Like I was told, plain water may do just as much as...

Hit a deer can it be fixed?

The reference was if it was an insurance repair (meaning if a body shop did the repair paid for by an insurance company). If it was my car and I was doing the repairs at home I'd probably do what you are doing.

Hit a deer can it be fixed?

The frame would have to be stripped bare at least to the firewall to put it on a frame machine and get just the frame straight, then all the new frame pieces installed. Huge job. (IF..it was an insurance repair) But you doing all this yourself is way impressive. Wish you luck. Anxious to...

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

I won't even mention that the same insurance companies hired a PI to watch me for a full month after the accident. I lived so far down a road there was no traffic....he said he was "buying the land and just doing some cleaning up".....yeah. Just in case they needed evidence photos to show me...

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

So **** many people are driving high and drunk (or from another country) that the roads have become a gambling casino and insurance a joke.

Rant: Accident right after replacing parts

hmmm......it depends on if you're in a hurry. I had a car that was totaled in an accident (someone elses fault) and they offered $1500 for the car and wanted the vehicle for salvage value (this was in 1993 and it was a 1984 Sports car) The car was like new before the accident. I said NO. I...

    Water Wetter

Some vehicles, like my minivans, came with small, thin radiators. They really aren't big enough. These older minivans can run up to 224F pretty quickly in the Summer months with a new radiator. Many of them have transmission coolers built into the radiators. Now switch on the AC on a 98F day...

    Water Wetter

The hotter the engine, the hotter the oil, hotter the oil the thinner the oil and with thinner oil comes lower oil pressure. So Water Wetter and that 10F does help lower oil temp as well. No? Evidence please?

    Water Wetter

Welp, I just added WW to (one of) my 1999 Dodge Grand Caravans. Took it on a 70 mile ride today with ambient around 92F Here's what I noticed...... Overall, it most certainly stayed cooler than before the WW. Maybe 5-10F cooler but I noticed the difference. The vehicle has a two year old...
