    SuperTech Synthetic Blend 5W-30 3.3k miles / 2008 Subaru Forester X 2.5L 134k miles

Yes, the 10W-30 may help with consumption. The only thing that slowed consumption on my FXT was 10W-40, although that was a very high strung turbo with short gearing. Over the years I've seen naturally aspirated EJ engines go much farther than the 7,500 mile OCI with very good uoa results.

Subaru EJ205 Turbo engine with 60k KMs - Mobil ESP or Truck&SUV oil? Please advise.

Welcome! Between those two, I would choose the ESP due to the higher HTHS as you mentioned. Although there's nothing wrong with running a full SAPS ACEA A3 xW-30 or xW-40 oil in this engine either. Reduced SAPS C3 oils like ESP are preferable in a DIT, but you don't have to worry about that...

Bad News for Sport Compact Car Fans - Subaru Kills the STi

The 5-speed died in the FXT because only magazines and people on the internet talked about it, but only me and like 10 other people bought one. :p Same goes for the FXT in general. But at least the Outback XT came back in 2019 with the Ascent's 2.4DIT. Definitely a bit more refined than the...

2016 Subaru STI 28xxx miles, 2870 mile uoa Castrol edge euro 0w40 w/ OEM filter

😆 Well, the severe service interval is actually 3k for that model year. I only did one more uoa after my turbo failure and 5k intervals seemed to be fine for me. But then again, my oil usage was 1 - 1.5 qts per OCI so I was usually adding fresh oil regularly. Especially with a lot of highway...

2016 Subaru STI 28xxx miles, 2870 mile uoa Castrol edge euro 0w40 w/ OEM filter

Ha! If I wouldn't have listened to this advice here on BITOG, I would've saved $2k+ on my turbo replacement. Care to donate to my turbo fund? :D Yes, many will say there was a "design flaw" in the EJ25x turbo during those early years due to the AVCS and turbo banjo bolt screens, but I extended...

2016 Subaru STI 28xxx miles, 2870 mile uoa Castrol edge euro 0w40 w/ OEM filter

Nice wear metals, but I do suspect that there is some fuel dilution and not necessarily shearing. 2,800 miles? Maybe we should move this to the Partial Used Oil Analysis forum. :p Although you are less than 200 miles aware from Subaru's severe service interval. Any mods @JamesGames ?

    Rotella T6 5w-40 @ 2.2k miles; 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5L with mods

If you're planning to keep the car I would recommend taking it to EFI Logics in Bethel. A buddy of mine, who also had an '05 LGT, has some issues with a rebuild in NJ. He went to EFI to have them fix the problems and he ended up with a reliable 400 whp car. These engines are usually tuned rich...

We just picked up a brand new 2022 Crosstrek Limited. Few Q’s y’all

If you dig up older Subaru factory fill uoa's, you'll absolutely see high levels of ZDDP and moly. Sometime around 2018 or so (maybe earlier), the ff uoa's started showing standard levels of ZDDP and moly (except for the STI which shows high ZDDP and moly). The oil is still a very dark black...

    Your favorite winter/snow/ice tire?

I ran Xice Xi3's on my Forester XT, and I currently run Xice Snows on my wife's 2009 Q5, with my Outback running CC2's. In addition to ice, the big difference in the CC2 vs the Xice's is braking. Gradual braking is fine (and I'm pleasantly surprised with the snow/ice performance of the CC2's)...

wrx sti dd and autocross / 300v vs ?

X-cess is a good choice and most any high SAPS xW-40. I’m a firm believer in high SAPS oils in an EJ25x. X-cess is what IAG specs in their built EJ’s. If you feel like saving some money go with any other high SAPS Euro xW-40 (Pennzoil, M1, Castrol, etc.) The Killer B oil pan gives you about an...

Why do you frequently change brands of oil?

FOMO. This brand is what came from the factory! But this one has the best Noack! No, this one has more zinc! This one has cooler base stocks! 🤯 When I purchased my 2020 Outback in 2019 I said that I was going to stick with Idemitsu since that what they use at the factory and sell at the...

    21 Subaru Ascent - M1 EP 0w20

Based on uoa's on nasioc on ESP 5W-30 from some years ago, most owners limited their OCI's to 5k miles on that and other C3 oils. For 30 grades, I believe all C3 oils have an HTHS of 3.5 or higher which is too high to meet ILSAC requirements. Basically, run an ILSAC xW-30 for a used oil...

WRX - Fear of Red Line 5W40 in Chicago Winter

If I said that it was probably before I got the new battery. 😁 Absolutely no issues with Red Line as it's robust add pack and robust HTHS and KV @ 100C is a great match for a WRX. Whether or not you need to run it is another story, especially on short intervals. I started sticking with <$30 a...

WRX - Fear of Red Line 5W40 in Chicago Winter

11-13. There's a viscosity chart and you have to squint to tell that it goes below 0F, but the Factory Service Manual mentions -4F. https://cdn.subarunet.com/stis/doc/ownerManual/MSA5M1013A.pdf Before I sold my Forester, I ran 10W-40 in the summer (mainly due to high consumption) and that...

WRX - Fear of Red Line 5W40 in Chicago Winter

P.S. - BTW, for the 2010 Model Year, the manual states that 10W-40 and 10W-50 is allowed down to -4F.

WRX - Fear of Red Line 5W40 in Chicago Winter

Agreed with the others. You should be fine with 5W-40. There is someone here that ran RT6 5W-40 in his WRX some years ago during winter in WI. Having said that, there is also the point that @kschachn mentioned about the battery. I noticed more of a starting difference with a better battery in...

    Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5w40 - Subaru FA20 (Scion FR-S) 4297km

Yes, and at that time I referred the engine builders to Subaru Japan's web site that showed that 5W-40 was allowed in the same engine.

    Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5w40 - Subaru FA20 (Scion FR-S) 4297km

Well that depends on the application IMO. When the FR-S/BRZ first came out, I read comments from engine builders that the bearing clearances absolutely did not allow anything thicker than a 20 grade. This was also what was advised to Subaru techs during training. In just a short time, there...
