Talk Some Sense into an Oil Thickie?

I love @edhackett 's signature line. "Never attribute to engineers that into which politicians, lawyers, accountants, and marketeers have poked their fingers".

Talk Some Sense into an Oil Thickie?

I'm in a similar boat. In my old Forester XT, 5W-30 was recommended and it allowed up to 10W-40. Given the issues with the EJ engine's bearings, I always went with a Euro xW-30, 0W-40, or 10W-40. Now that I have a new Outback turbo, I'm actually sticking with the 0W-20 recommendation. This 2.4...

Limit on Home Depot military discount

It is so much work registering for all of the different military discounts (Gov-X, ID me, etc.). It was easier to get into the military. :ROFLMAO: I did register for the Lowes discount, but didn't go with the HD one since they use a different company. And I don't have a Veteran's ID card, but...

Mobil 1 EP 0w-20 1970 miles 2020 Subaru Outback XT

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of people that judge an oil based on the used viscosity in one or two uoa's because they believe that the oil itself has "sheared" so they are convinced that the oil isn't suitable to run in that application. Subaru forums are full of that misinformation. I've...

Mobil 1 EP 0w-20 1970 miles 2020 Subaru Outback XT

There's 1.7% fuel contamination, which is pretty good for this engine, so it's difficult to know if the viscosity loss is due to shearing.

Good point. I believe it's Idemitsu there as well, but could be formulated differently. In this thread I mention a Legacy FF UOA with 675 ppm of moly. Back when I first noticed differences, it was actually all in the 2.0DIT WRX. Those threads are on nasioc.

I have found Subaru FF UOA's to be very inconsistent. Prior to about 2018, they were always very consistent across all models. After that, some FF UOA's show metallic add packs that match GF5/GF6 metallic additive levels while some still showed high ZDDP and moly. There's a Crosstrek UOA with...

I know, since that business was sold. Thanks, it's just a habit. It took me 10 years to stop saying OEM Purolator! :ROFLMAO:

I went from being an oil thickie in my turbocharged EJ, to an oil thinnie in my turbocharged OB XT. I think I'm running 0W-20 just to see if I ever have a problem. 😀 Despite a lot of fuel contamination, the FA24DIT doesn't seem to have the bearing issues that the EJ25x had. I'll be posting a UOA...

2022 Subaru Crosstrek 1st Oil Change Very High Silicon

Probably around 170,000 of the over 190,000 miles on my Forester XT were using OEM Honeywell filters. Never once had an issue with that filter.

    Forester Tires

It depended what model and tire set up I had. ’97 Outback Sport - No ’03 WRX - Yes ’04 Forester - Yes ‘20 Outback - No I actually never even knew it was an issue.

Havoline Pro-RS Hits the Shelves (Walmart)

I do agree that people need to compare apples to apples (e.g. 25% plant based oil to 25% plant based oil). Although, if it's the same base stock that is being referred to in this article then Novvi considers it a Group "III+". 🤷‍♂️
