I have the cheapest new alternators I can find on Amazon/Ebay on a few cars and none have had any issues so far.. Some are several years old now. Buy the $100 alternator and don't lose any sleep.

I'd recheck compression again yourself and see what you get. I know I've driven a v8 with a dying cylinder and it was honestly pretty hard to tell it was down 1 unless you were paying good attention. I can see it being borderline and having enough compression to fire cool and not as it warms up...

I see no issue with that diameter difference. You could have that much difference between a new/worn tire of the same size..
