If thick oil offers more protection, then isn't cold oil best?

Im not Savvy enough to tag everyone in response but I agree with the counter arguments you guys have all made and also compare bearing specs to oil viscosity along with the argument that when it's -40* here and I have to head to work running late without having my truck plugged in and under a...

If thick oil offers more protection, then isn't cold oil best?

I'll help Op out here because I feel like his question is misunderstood... How thick is too thick of a viscosity before it's doing more harm than good. This is a story I heard from my co-worker and fellow mechanic who is also a thickie... allegedly his elderly father took some new synthetic...

3rd Heater Core Plugged In 6 Months...

Provided the filter doesn't plug, I don't imagine the filter will hinder heater operation. Keep in mind that the core is getting fed 100*C coolant when everything is at operating temperature and it's not shedding 100*C just going through the dash for your heat. Have they opened a case file...

cold weather cause alternator bearing failure?

I was primed for the like button thinking you were setting up to say the bearings are quieter because you don't use the thing in the winter

Axle splines stuck in the knuckle

Don't do that please because, more often than not the torque from the axle nut is to hold the wheel bearing/hub assembly together with the proper preload. Most if not all service manuals will say not even to put the weight of the vehicle on the hub much less roll it or it will compromise the...

cold weather cause alternator bearing failure?

If the bearings aren't worn (unlikely at this stage) you can gingerly peel out the seals and pack a little grease in there.. I believe you want max 50% grease fill or the bearing and grease will overheat from the grease shearing too much in there

cold weather cause alternator bearing failure?

So I did a little search on This dodge dealer website (I don't know where you're located so there may be a closer/cheaper online dealer to you or from This site ) along with rockauto and neither have a kit (american manufacters don't tend to sell rebuilt kits) so for the bearings you'd have to...

cold weather cause alternator bearing failure?

Diodes would be okay then, fresh bearings, carbon brushes and clean the alternator mount in points along with other other grounds and you'll be okay. A note with older vehicles is that the alternators just didn't put out the current flow of newer vehicles. An example being my 92 Camry which...

Axle splines stuck in the knuckle

Throw the nut on the end and hit it with a bigger hammer and harder... or if you were my buddy then i'd say hit it with a bigger purse

Axle splines stuck in the knuckle

Throw the old axle nut over the threads before beating on the end next time so that you don't mushroom the axle. Otherwise my eyes may be lying but, it looks like the axle is free from the hub already... if it moves in and out then it's free and you just have to remove the strut mounts or ball...

cold weather cause alternator bearing failure?

Could also be (a) dirty ground(s) or glazed carbon brushes/slip rings. Both issues can be corrected with some scotch-brite, but a quick check of the diodes is to turn as many of your electrical accessories as possible such as high beams, full fan, rear defrost, etc then check the AC (not DC)...

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

I' Yes and I don't know if the synchronizer is brass or has a composite friction surface

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

Thank you and gotcha, I see what you're saying(I believe). Similar to a GL5 vs. GL4 75w-90 gear oil, although both may have the same viscosity, they both have different additives and both gear oils are made with a different purpose in mind beyond simply lubricating.

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

I agree with you that Amsoil's MTF is a great match and I still feel like it is based on this transfer case in a oversimplified way being a manual transmission with only direct drive and an under drive gear along with the viscosity of MTF. I've had MTF in my transfer case for about 80'000kms...

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

Thank you for the info, I am quite active on TW and partially read that thread a while ago but i've revisit it. Also ya this is just a conventional electronically shifted part time two speed transfer case. Nothing special about it aside from it's oil recommendation but, with myself also not...

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

"Which MTF are you speaking to, MTF-LV or the Amsoil synchromesh?" I was using MTF to signify Amsoil syncromesh fluid and MT-LV to represent the redline of that flavour. "The difference, other than viscosity, would be the additive package and its friction modifier chemistry. CVT fluids have...

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

The spec is just 75W and according to a VOA I found Here, it has a viscosity of 5.68 cSt@100*C. I personally have never done an oil analysis though. I do understand that cold viscous fluid is gonna have more drag, despite my time of year for posing this, I had summer time in mind for my...

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

I'm kinda green to the site still, I did try searching around but didn't really find much. I'm not asking you for links because that would be time consuming but any special keywords or phases that you feel would point me in the right direction?

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

Aha it is possible that i've being delusional but it is an observation i've noticed with it. Not earth shattering or anything and I fully agree that 75-90 would also be fine and without issue but that "drag" is my observation. I like experimenting and largely just started this thread with the...

DCT Fluid for Transfer Case Service

This is a general discussion i'm hoping to open up but, in my particular case the application I have in mind is a 2021 Toyota Tacoma (6MT) which as far as I've read has a VF2CM transfer case. The Manufacture suggested fluid is 75W Gear oil. A little back story is that for me, the Toyota juice...
