    Oldsmobile diesel history

Back in the early 80's diesel fuel actually cost 5-10% less than gas so with the cheaper fuel and better mileage, switching to diesel power easily cut your fuel bill by 25%. I think I remember that I calculated the extra cost for the diesel engine would have been paid back at about 50k miles...

Plastic needle in 2021 Briggs 625EXi engine

I haven't seen one with a 100% plastic needle. I have seen a plastic needle with a rubber tip.

    Oldsmobile diesel history

I owned a Olds diesel in a '82 Monte Carlo. It got great gas mileage but I had to have it towed home 3 times in 5 years of ownership. My problems were mostly injection system related, despite buying 100% filtered fuel. I got rid of it before it had enough miles to blow head gaskets...

Severe ant infestation in a rental property

We get April and October ants when heavy rains come in. I spray around the perimeter of the house with malathion and the ones that still sneak inside are lured into HotShot bait traps. I've tried several brands of traps and our ants seem to prefer the HotShots.

    OUTLOOK ALREADY RUNNING message

You can also go into task manager and shut Outlook down that way. I use Outlook and sometimes it doesn't shut down clean and complete.

    Washing vinyl siding, product recommendations?

For immediate gratification mix chlorox and water 50/50 in a pump sprayer. Spray thoroughly then rinse. Pressure washer not needed. This tends to accelerate rusting of nails however, as the chlorox turns to salt and you can't ever rinse 100% of the salt off. For slow and steady non corrosive...

Do LED lightbulbs eliminate the need for rough duty light bulbs?

My experience was the door opener was tough on LED bulbs that tended to have short lives anyway, like some filament type LEDs I bought, and some off brand freebies the electric distributor was giving away. The Feit half dome type bulbs I replaced those with have lasted just fine.

Honda Ridgeline 6 speed transmission issues?

My 2017 Ridgeline came with the 6 speed. They DEMAND on schedule fluid changes or you can start to get surging at moderate speeds and light loads on the highway. Fluid change fixed it. During very light load neighborhood driving you can sometimes hear a clack as it shifts from 3-4? That is...

    Maggie Smith has passed

She was the comic relief on Downton Abbey. As the difficult, dry witted old Dowager she was an absolute hoot.

Appears no way to startup a new out of box laptop without logging into MSFT

The latest iteration of Office apps require you to be logged into Microsoft to use them if internet is available. Microsoft is becoming worse than the Borg, pardon me, Apple about sucking you into their eco system. The end result is their "seamless" Onedrive cloud is incomprehensibly...

    Old Fram PH5

I used a few of those until I cut one open. Fiber end caps and about 12 pleats.

    My first rental car.

It has occurred to me that you still see a few trucks from the 80''s and 90's and an occasional big car like an Impala or Crown Vic, but you NEVER see the compact cars like the Corsica or Citation. Our company bought Corsica's as corporate fleet cars around 1990 and they were miserable. You...

    4' Tube LED's VS 4' Tube Fluorescent ?

Repeated off/on cycles shorten the life of fluorescent lights because the high voltage kick needed to start them blasts the electron emissive material off the electrodes at the ends. It's the black stuff that accumulates inside the tubes at the ends. LED's don't have that issue. I have...

    Spam Calls on Home Phone

For some reason my mother has been genetically incapable of passing up a ringing telephone her entire life. She used to get telemarketers calling her every single day about her amazon account or medicare or something or another. Sometimes the same people would call twice a day. After she...

    Silverado Engine Oil Filter

If you went back to the dealer for an oil change you would get whatever ACDELCO filter the owner's manual specifies. It isn't a sexy or tortuously analytical choice but as the other brands get bought and sold with production shifted around to different places at least GM has a vested interest...

    Hot water heater question

Yup. The heat trap is designed to prevent the convection you are depending on.. As a side note, I'm not familiar with a gravity powered circulation arrangement like you describe, but without a check valve in the return line, I would think half your hot water would feed from the cold area of...

    Hot water heater question

The heat trap nipple has a ball in a cage or flap that closes off the pipe when there is no flow. The pressure differential created when you open a faucet will open the trap and let water flow normally but convection currents carrying hot water up the pipe do not provide enough force to lift...

Glass top or coil top cooktop.

I feel your pain. My mother has never gotten a new appliance, furniture, car, or doctor that she liked and never had an old one that wasn't solid gold. Despite all the medical advances in her 90 years of life, "these new doctors just don't know as much as the old ones".

Glass top or coil top cooktop.

After 40 years of hands on kitchen research, :giggle: I can offer the following observations. Coils will heat up and cool off fairly quickly, but they never seem to sit level which is a hassle when trying to cook with just a little oil or butter in a pan. They also never seem to be flat which...
