Cartridge vs. cannister style oil filters...pros/cons?

From what I have heard the housings & orings in these have been improved on the OEM level so leaks aren’t that common any longer…

Cartridge vs. cannister style oil filters...pros/cons?

Google Chrysler 3.6 Pentastar, housings can fail as well as the 5 orings it takes to seal it to the top of the engine block.

    Mercruiser (GM) 4.3l UOA x2 Delvac 1300 11hr and 37hr OCI

I just did another so I will post it up later today; it’s about the same as the one I did in 2023. Here’s what I learned, it takes a number of seasons for the wear particles to wash out. My engine had sodium in the motor oil as far back as the first analysis I did and after the overheat in 2013...

Portable Generators - 15W40 in freezing weather?

IIFC Briggs recommended syn 5/30 for all temperatures, that's what I use in my B&S 5,000 watt unit, I ran it on this oil at least 10 hrs a day for 2 weeks during Superstorm Sandy with basically no oil consumption. PS (second pic) make up something like this for a no-mess generator oil change....

    Sold the 2005 Corolla

My last one was a 1989 Corolla Sport Coupe with the rear spoiler and pop up front lights and the wonderful Toyota 1600 Twin Cam 4AGE engine. Still regret selling that one! Kept it 9 years and 99,000 miles. Same engine as a Mk1 MR-2

Will used oil analysis ALWAYS detect head gasket leaks?

I'm not sure about an 09 but on our '98 OB with the EJ2.5 we had trouble with the head gaskets 2x, first was at 109,000 where it started overheating and overflowing the recovery tank, had it fixed by the dealer, then again at 186,000 miles, same thing, episodic overheating and af bubbling and...

Quicksilver (Mercury Marine) 35-802886O (Ford FL-1A)

The Merc and Sierra filters for the 4.3 (different base size than the 5.0 or 5.7 are really short, like maybe 1/2 the length of the long filters (Sierra and Merc used to be long but have been short for years). Other options for this engine are the Purolator or the AC, both long filters like the...

Quicksilver (Mercury Marine) 35-802886O (Ford FL-1A)

Interesting, in the past I used a mix of Mercruiser and Sierra filters. Then I read that report in Practical Sailor on used oil filters, they found problems with Fram and also Sierra (which by the way is probably the most used brand by marina and independent marine mechanics). What they said...

Post your latest boat or PWC oil and filter change

On the subject of oil filter wrenches here's a trick that I started using back in the '70s on our '72 Chevy Impala 350 cu in long before cap wrenches were invented, all we had was the strap wrench. One day I went in the garage, found some coarse sandpaper and folded it in half, both sides with...

Post your latest boat or PWC oil and filter change

I have a collection of cap wrenches, if they fit right they don't crush, not that it matters that much, unless it's a fuel filter that you want to dump out and re-use.

At what temp will an engine with water freeze?

I have long been of the opinion that all cast iron auto-derived inboard gas engines should have at least a half closed cooling system, for the block. Reasons: 1) these engines were designed by GM, Ford or Chrysler to have pressurized cooling systems with antifreeze and corrosion inhibitors 2)...

At what temp will an engine with water freeze?

My solution is no more raw water cooled I/Os, I have had it here in salt water Long Island for 20 years and I've about had it with the crawling around in the bilge to drain the block. Only outboards from now on.

How Old Is Your Lawn Mower(s)?? And How Many Hours Approximately?

I have an old (1987) push mower a friend gave me in the '90s with a B&S 3.5 hp with the Pulsa-Jet carb. Cleaned and rebuilt the carb a few times and it gets an oil change at the end of each season. Starts on the 2nd pull.....

NYC ... My view from the past two weeks

I grew up in Brooklyn 1959-1968 by the time we moved out the city was on the way down, I went to college there in the '70s (Manhattan campus of Fordham Univ) and it was just awful by then, we were hardened to it, but after Guiliani came in things were MUCH MUCH better, then the fool Di Blasio...

Audi Svc Dept says Q3 has Sealed Xmsn

The Euro designers have it rigged, to make more money in the service bay than in the showroom. I watched several oil changes on the ZF 8 speed used in many Chrysler and Jeep products and had to scratch my head, why would you want to put the fill port right next to a very hot cat converter. I...

    Mercruiser (GM) 4.3l UOA x2 Delvac 1300 11hr and 37hr OCI

Ok looked at yours, and yes the SI is high and I think you're right that it may be from all the 'glass work. The other wear metals may really just still be break in, so I'd just monitor it. I also have Blackstone reports on my engine going back to 2011, I had high metals wear and sodium, (salt...

    Subaru Outback vs Forester

Ahh not so much on the Grand Cherokee....the V8s are gone (those could tow 7200 lbs) and were very hard to find even in the last 5 years, unless you bought the higher trim levels that also stuck you with the trouble prone air suspension and wrinkle prone leather dash cover. So most you will find...

2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport (Father/Son Project)

Great project and nice to see it progressing Our "classic" jeep is the old '98 ZJ Grand 4.0 which is in need of a full restoration. Especially body work. Mechanically it is in pretty good shape, only 181,000 on the 4.0. On the ZJ series there is just enough room to not need that oil filter...
