Any oil will be fine in a 1980s engine, just use s HDEO oil and it will last longer than the body. Also can’t you just change the can follower? Like in VW EA113 engines?

Fixed a coolant leak on a heater core on a L120H at a dump/recylcling centre, had to remove the whole interior and remove the core from the outside. Not fun.

Light duty diesels don’t even count, a small 6L v8 that goes to Walmart isn’t even in the question.

Just wanted to know for fun what spec is the best to look for, if there even are any stringent specs for HDEO. I have read that VDS 4.5 is kinda stringent but every 15W-40 dino oil meets so that hard cant it be. Regards
