This thread flake topic me thinking. Seems like maybe it'd be a good idea to have a properly threaded pipe or bolt that every new filter could be threaded onto and off of prior to installing filter to help remove any partially attached flakes. Would that be a good idea?
I thought so. I'm trying to make a point by asking the question. I assumed the answer would be as you and others have stated. Hopefully the OP sees the point I'm making.
There's no way he could know if the metal flake came from the filter threads because he didn't check the threads before...
I visually inspected the Oreilly Microgard and NAPA Gold filters I bought. I did not see any metal shavings nor other issues. That said, visually checking is a good idea because it could happen with any brand of filter.
OK. Well I guess that means Prestone PSF is better than ATF+4 for your Jeep power steering. Oreilly Master Pro (house brand) PSF is made by Prestone. So it's really just Prestone PSF.
I used to use a Valvoline synthetic ATF in one of my Jeeps with good results. Lucas ATF in another with good...
Prestone makes the worst PSF on the market that I know of. You might want to flush and refill with something better. Literally anything else is better, IMO.
Inspect the oil on dipstick. What color? Frothy or not? Usual smell or extra stinky? If you're in the habit of always wiping off underside of filler cap at OCI time, then an inspection of underside of filler cap can provide visual clues as to your current oil's condition.
Modern oils are good...
Probably because Honda doesn't want people buying other brands of PSF that might cause damage, which would in-turn damage Honda's reputation for reliability. So I think they figure it's in their best interest to keep Honda PSF affordable. Also, Idemitsu (maker of Honda oils) is itself...
Oreilly Microguard Select is an excellent filter. I'd be happy to use one.
However, NAPA Gold is slightly better as shown in an online side-by-side filter dissection Youtube video of the two. I don't have the link, but you can Google it.
OK. Just realize Idemitsu and Honda are the same oil. Idemitsu makes the oil Honda sells. Honda just puts a Honda sticker on the bottle.
It's nice that Honda Dealerships don't overcharge like many other brands dealerships do.
Idemitsu/Honda PSF is exceptionally good. I'm very impressed by it's...
I come from a family that did no car maintenance ever, except for the oil changes I did for my mom and dad once a year, which was 10K miles on 1980s Pennzoil yellow bottle. I had to walk home with my mom on a couple of occasions. My dad was worse because he'd sit in his car and steer while I...
You're probably correct. 👍 I didn't think of that.
However, we changed the 2 cars a month apart. So it would have been an added nuisance to store used oil from my Buick to do a side-by-side sniff test a month later. Next year (next oil change) I'm going to follow your advice if it's stinky...
It's fun to imagine you writing the next Costco sale date on your oil change sticker and putting that on upper left of windshield. I'm making fun in a friendly way. It's not meant to be derisive. The idea appeals to me. 🙂
Personally, I don't stockpile oil. I buy it within a month of using it.
Is your OCI based on when the Costco sales happen? 🤣 That isn't meant to be sarcastic. It sounds like some I would do. In fact, you may have just inspired me to do that. 🙂
Not the best filter, but maybe good enough. For what you're doing, I wish you were using NAPA Gold because it filters 23 microns @ 99% and is designed for extended OCI with silicon gasket and anti drainback valve. Napa Gold has a coil spring, which is a more reliable design. Supertech filters...
OEM Honda PSF is made by Idemitsu. You can buy it much cheaper with Idemitsu label on the bottle. Same oil.
Rock Auto sells Idemitsu PSF for $4.39 a bottle. I bought some last week.
One reason I like to go up one grade is safety margin. My car is driven easy, but what if a radiator hose blows and we're in heavy traffic and can't pull over for a while? Those things can happen. If fact, that did happen to one of the Jeep 4L that I owned.
I had to keep driving (on a hot day...
Honda oils are made by Idemitsu.
So if you buy Idemitsu PSF you're getting the same thing as Honda PSF, but Idemitsu name costs less than Honda name. Idemitsu PSF is $4.39 per 12 oz bottle at Rock Auto. I bought some last week from Rockauto for a CR-V. Idemitsu PSF is less $ per ounce than...
