Is a VOA a necessity before doing UOA?

OK. A VOA is necessary. Got it. Thanks

What PS Fluid do you use?

For American and GM specifically I'll rank the 5 best PSF in order of best, excellent, excellent, very good, good: Idemitsu, Amsoil, Red Line, Valvoline Professional Series, Lucas. That list and ranking is based solely on datasheets, not official recommendations. Idemitsu greatly exceeds...

    Microgard Select - No Love?

The Microgard Select for my Buick is advertised 25 microns @ 99%. Perhaps it varies by size or part #? Not that it matters though. Whether 20 or 25, either is good. That said, in future I will use NAPA Gold.

What PS Fluid do you use?

In regard to post 55. Here are some data sheets for comparison. Note the cSt viscosity differences at KV100 aka 100C. Stock PSF for Buick & GM (for comparison): AC Delco OE cSt ?, ?, VI 150, FP347, PP -44F

I knew what you meant. I just wanted to make sure any newbies reading would also know. Thanks for spelling it out.

Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

I agree in regard to 80s cars. Most of them were gutless. However, 60s & early 70s cars had lots of torque and horsepower. They did fine using conventional oils AFAIK.

Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

I was that guy. 🤣 Except not totally gutless because it was a 76 city cop car. It got 18 mpg on highway though. Pretty decent for a mid 70s V8 huge car with a square frontend. I was driving it in the mid and late 80s.

When you say CHF, do you mean Pentosin CHF?

What PS Fluid do you use?

I don't know. The only Lucas PSF that I know of is what's in my Buick right now. It's clear fluid that came in a clear bottle. I'd describe it as an adequate PSF, but nothing to brag on even when new. Now it's 14 years olds and needs to go. It's a good conventional PSF (I mean good for a...

What PS Fluid do you use?

Correction regarding using Idemitsu PSF vs Honda PSF in Hondas. Idemitsu is 7.65 cSt @ 100C, which makes it by far the thickest power steering fluid you can buy (other than Honda PSF) AFAIK. I downloaded a current Honda PSF data sheet to compare. Honda PSF is 12.6 cSt @ 100C. 😳 That's thicker...

Is Rando a brand or do you mean any random PSF that's available? 🤔 😆

    Microgard Select - No Love?

I see. He says OEM filters don't rust, but he posted a photo of a very rusty (rusted through) FRAM filter, which looked a lot rustier to me than the Microgard Select filter. You're saying FRAM, Champion, and AC Delco filters are now siblings. So even if an ACD filter was more rust reistant in...

    Microgard Select - No Love?

No one is raking you over any coals. There are no coals in this thread. I questioned why you thought the metal piece was from the filter because you initially didn't explain your reasoning. After your further explanation, I don't doubt you. I've never seen a rusty filter even though I live in a...

2019 F150 - Can't remember miles of last change - Check via OLM?

Inspect the oil on the dipstick. If it looks and smells normal (or doesn't smell) keep using it.

What PS Fluid do you use?

I joined an international Honda CR-V forum 2 weeks ago to get detailed info about Honda CR-V. At that forum they say you can use Honda or Idemitsu PSF, but only those 2. They said it's the same oil. If it's not the same, it must be close enough because many of the members at that forum are using...

What PS Fluid do you use?

That used to be my approach as well and it worked fine until I had a Jeep with oversize tires which stressed the power steering. Suddenly my choice of PSF mattered. Now with my Buick, it matters because the power steering seems to be its achilles heel. It was very unhappy using old AC Delco...

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

I was using Maxlife Syn with an above average quality Baldwin filter for 3 years OCI. The Baldwin filter was rated 40 microns @ 99% and was built like a tank. I'm currently using Maxlife Blend with an Oreilly Microgard Select filter made by Premium Guard in it's Vietnam factory. It's more...

Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

Yes that was commonly accepted knowledge back then, including among certified mechanics. My autoshop instructor taught us that in school. I don't know if it was correct info. That was correct. The engineering designs of cars back in-the-day did fine with conventional oil in moderate climates...

Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

Yaaa, umm... Hmm. Based on what you just posted, you don't know the difference between Silent Gen, Boomers, or Gen X. 🙄 I'm sure you know more about how it was back-in-the-day when we were young even though you weren't born yet. 🤣
