    Oil Filter Value Analysis

Thanks @Bellavita! Very nice. A couple of thoughts. I removed a no-name filter off my daughter's 2010 Subaru Outback yesterday and it was interesting to me to see how the filter just dumped most of its oil after I removed it from the car. I am used to Fram Ultras that hold almost all the oil...

Being without a car feels weird

I've spent years at a time traveling by boat and not owning cars and it is amazing how much money you save, but I would occasionally rent a car for some particular trip. Even renting occasionally the annual cost savings is huge. I know some young people who live in cities that don't have...

    "Michigan left"

Aided by the New England traffic engineers who think it is hilarious changing up which lane suddenly becomes a dedicated turning lane with no rhyme or reason. Left turn only then the next block the right lane becomes right turn only. Then there's what I call the Maine Left Turn. Straddle the...

Oil for small 2010 Yamaha 4-stroke 4HP outboard?

I hear ya, but the same arguments for non-synthetics could be made for most cars and trucks most of us drive. We could run the engines on dino oil for the life of the car, like we used to back in the day, but many of us still like to know we have that extra protection if the engine overheats, or...

    Tc-w3 in gas engine

    SuperTech. Yes, it was tcw-3.

To EV or not to EV

A little counterintuitive thinking on EVs for someone who doesn't drive a lot. There are advantages to an EV powertrain in minimal use situations. The motors and battery are minimally impacted by just sitting. You might be able to go years with no routine maintenance. There is nothing wrong with...

    DIY oil changes and migraines

Maybe I missed it, but do we know skin contact with oil is the problem? Isn't it possible that fumes are the trigger?

    Alcohol Detection Sensors

A bit OT, but where I live a lot of DWI could be avoided in the first place if law enforcement bothered to enforce existing laws in a commonsense manner. Within a 10-minute walk from my house you can visit probably 100 eating and drinking establishments. The police almost never stop anyone...

    Tc-w3 in gas engine

One ounce to 5 gallons. I can't say the O2 and Cat problems were directly related, but happened to me on two cars I eventually got CEL lights after using the regimen for awhile, and then needed to do O2 sensors and then cats. Stopped doing the regimen and no longer had the problems. Could have...

You Can't Change Your Oil Too Much!

One huge factor in my thinking (mentioned by Berlin above) is that my time is worth a lot to me, and though I don't mind changing oil from time to time it is not something I find as valuable as other things I would like to be doing instead. Even though I am technically retired I am just as busy...

    Tc-w3 in gas engine

Happened to me with two different cars using tcw-3. Codes and problems. Plus, I could detect no difference in operation other than the hassle of adding the tcw-3 at each fillup.

You Can't Change Your Oil Too Much!

The minimum I will go is the recommended change mileage in the manual, or every six months. Back when I used to drive a lot I would do 3,000 miles in a month so oil changes got neglected, and I didn't have much money or time so they happened at quicky lubes or garages advertising a low price...

    DIY oil changes and migraines

One small advantage of having no garage and having to do my work in the driveway is plenty of ventilation--too much in January!

    Tc-w3 in gas engine

For what it's worth I tried tcw-3 for a couple of years and quit it after going through several O2 sensors and eventually a cat way too early. After ending the tcw-3 regimen I stopped replacing O2 sensors yearly and no more cats. I recommend spending your money on Top Tier gas instead.

    DIY oil changes and migraines

I agree that it is certainly worth testing the theory by not doing oil changes for a year.

Oil for small 2010 Yamaha 4-stroke 4HP outboard?

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with Yamalube 10W-30, and it only needs 0.6 liters so cost is not a huge consideration, but I just like the potential extra protection going synthetic.

Oil for small 2010 Yamaha 4-stroke 4HP outboard?

I've read some threads debating what oil is suitable for larger 4-stroke outboards, but didn't see much for smaller engines. I recently purchased a like-new 2010 Yamaha 4HP. Peering at the oil it must have been changed before storage as it is perfectly clean. In fact, everything under the cover...

Is "Overlanding" a thing in your area yet?

I saw one of these ridiculous rigs in a public campground in the foothills of the Adirondacks. The crew was sitting on the roof for some reason. Most of the other campers were in regular RVs, and some in tents. I don't get camping on the roof.

    Motorcraft FL-2127 oil filter?

Fram search shows an XG3614 for that vehicle, which is what you get if you cross reference the FL-910S.
