    Honda K24 Valvetrain, 135K miles

I’d suspect the pictures prior to HPL wouldn’t have looked much worse; but the VRP is clearly cleaning up the pistons. Working as advertised!

Is Maxlife Extended Protection ATF a true full synthetic

Interesting. For my Honda Fit, it took the 2nd interval on Amsoil’s ATL to reduce transmission case whine that was occurring before. There seemed to be some cleaning on the first run. (After a complete conversion from Honda DW-1) 67k miles was the first run…a darkened pink color. Good layer of...

Is Maxlife Extended Protection ATF a true full synthetic

If you like Amsoil, then just run their ATF for your vehicle. It’s an excellent ATF choice. That said, the Valvoline product is superb as well. Go with whatever brand you like. Both brands have a longstanding history of cult-like followings because those brands provided good alternatives to OE...

    New CVT oil ??

I would use high-end boutique CVT fluid without hesitation. Price point isn't a constraint. I've yet to hear of a boutique transmission fluid ruining anything. I have heard of terrible CVTs failing with OEM fluids. So, no, I don't buy you have to use OEM.

VRP then moving on to boutique (HPL/Amsoil/Redline/etc) - why?

True. I guess my original point was, unless you have consistent consumption increases with a poorly designed engine, it’s not necessarily a better option outside of that primary feature it offers. Much like if you use a boutique oil for only 3k miles, no real need, right? I believe the boutique...

VRP then moving on to boutique (HPL/Amsoil/Redline/etc) - why?

I simply stated the facts. And, it’s not the only oil that has cleaning or run clean capabilities. It may do that specific thing; cleaning existing piston deposits, better than anything we’ve ever seen for a PCMO. Sure, that’s awesome! What else does it offer? There is no such thing as a one...

VRP then moving on to boutique (HPL/Amsoil/Redline/etc) - why?

How is it superior other than its ability to clean existing deposits? Plenty of engines that are spotless before VRP ever existed.

VRP then moving on to boutique (HPL/Amsoil/Redline/etc) - why?

Good points. If an engine is in need of cleaning, VRP sure seems to be the best option in that context and perhaps in niche situations where an engine family is known to notoriously develop oil consumption; perhaps as in your own case. Once that is squared away though or I have a clean engine...

waste spark design and twin tips?

I’ll probably give them a try as they are way cheaper than the long life plugs right now. Ruthenium is cheaper than the long life, by a little, but these by Denso are much cheaper.

waste spark design and twin tips?

I’m coming up on a plug change (100k intervals) and so far I’ve used the Long Life Iridiums (stock) of both the Denso and NGK brands. I have considered trying the subject TT Iridiums as I was researching the NGK Ruthenium. Is it accurate to say that the NGK Ruthenium with Twin Tip is...

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

Yes, an important, but clear distinction. I believe the question for me is how likely mine is dirty or just a leaky seal that’s fairly clean. I know we typically say looking at the valve train with covers removed can be indicative of general engine cleanliness; which mine has, but the...

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

Would anyone have hesitations on running VRP in an engine that has a rear main seal that leaks very slowly? About the only way it could make the leak worse is if it’s currently slowed by a layer of crud and that gets cleaned up, right? At least, that’s how I picture it possibly going. I guess if...

Valvoline R&P if you can’t manage the next two OCI on time?

While I like erring on the side of caution, if the mileage is really under 4k annually as another poster highlighted, then I think VRP is perfectly fine for the full year or once every 6 months. It’s a no brainer for the price of any OTS full synthetic and there is no need to worry about filter...

Oil Change Intervals 3k vs Longer with full synthetic

I’m at 340k on my Fit doing pretty much that. 70% highway miles, 27 mile commute twice a day. 20 miles interstate. Granted this thing is like 100HP to the wheels but still! 😂

My Walmart has dropped the Endurance for a new 20k Purolator

Cool. I might try the Pentius XL when my CQ Premiums are gone through; given their price hike. Crazy that M1 and I believe also Napa Gold has swapped over to PG? Good for them!

My Walmart has dropped the Endurance for a new 20k Purolator

@Glenda W. Curious if you have a preference between the Pentius XL or the Premium Guards; having inspected/used each?

    Amsoil SS 5w30 - 22 Colorado 3.6L - 5,490 miles

Personally, I like how the SS is formulated by comparison. It ended with a stronger TBN each run compared to the EP though more samples are needed. SS has more moly and boron plus a very high oxidation. While most EP appears to be GTL base these days (outside of maybe EP 0w-20), the Signature...

Which oil next? Experiment on 2018 Outback

It will be interesting to see if the consumption remains stable or even improved further on the ESP. Oil isn’t just oil. Depends on the demands of engine and conditions seen! Much like there are minimum acceptable levels, maximum allowed standards etc for a specific API test requirement; we...

Which oil next? Experiment on 2018 Outback

Anyone that reads the summary in this thread: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/valvoline-r-p-oil-burner-test-results.393476/ And thinks “gee M1 really was a problem here!” 8 ounces in 5k miles is negligible and was consistent from new. That, IMO, is clearly the design flaw. It wasn’t...

Which oil next? Experiment on 2018 Outback

    1) Speaking for myself, this has nothing to do with brand; I have used Valvoline for the majority of my life and it’s got excellent products including their EP. 2) Your assumption that I lay “no” blame at the feet of M1 is on you; not my words. 3) According to your stated reasoning, we also...
