Keeping external drive plugged in to desktop 24/7

Data center drives are designed differently (i.e. helium filled, seek algorithm, power stability, temperature, etc). Raid is not a replacement for backup. You still should have a backup off site periodically in case the place burn down or lightning / flooding etc destroy all the drives side by...

Keeping external drive plugged in to desktop 24/7

Typical mechanical hard drive is designed for 5 years lifespan (data retention, mechanical wear and tear, etc) and warranty for 1. It does not wear out much more just because you plug it in and power it on than not (data center duty cycle is different and they do wear out more based on statistic...

    Foam filled tires

I don't get how can you create your own foam and still prevent the tire from going out of balance as your speed increase. It may not be uniform and it can easily spun around and shifting the weight inside, and never be able to balance it right.

    Fererro buying Kellogg

About genetics. I know a lot of people will not be aware of this but every generation of today's Asians seem to be significantly taller than their parents. I remember seeing photos of WW2 era Japanese male being only around 5', and their current generation is 5'5"+, with not much more than...

    Fererro buying Kellogg

Most Asian don't eat brown rice. It is not the rice that makes you fat or thin. BTW the people who live close to the longest in the world, those Japanese and Hong Konger? They don't eat brown rice usually either.

    Fererro buying Kellogg

I know what you mean, I'm not saying it is wrong. Human has a tendency to desire the wrong thing once we find a way to commoditize it. We were wired to like calories 200 years ago because it keep us alive. That makes us pay more for comfort food, that makes us try to make comfort food...

    Fererro buying Kellogg

    1. Portion control 2. Dessert type (and portion control) 3. Fat amount (Panda Express is not the same type of Asian food they eat there, some people call it American food, and even if they eat the same type of food they don't eat as much, so yeah, portion control). 4. American are desensitized...

    Fererro buying Kellogg

Food used to be more expensive, people used to eat less comfort food. I don't think people were any worse health conscious but as a portion of personal income we used to spend more on food so we don't eat the expensive things that were also unhealthy. Is it our fault to make it cheaper? People...

    Fererro buying Kellogg

Food has gone like this over time when people pay less for more calories. I can say the same about chicken and pork. I remember they didn't taste that bad when I was a kid and now there are certain food I would no longer eat because they stink. You can blame the boomer but the only way to win is...

    Fererro buying Kellogg

Let's be honest, whoever own this brand is going to make the same cereals regardless. The reason many of these mergers happen in the world is because of money. Either the company pay dividends, share buybacks (the same really except owners pay capital gain tax if they cash out instead of income...

Glad you had a great trip. Thanks for the suggestion. I always wanted to visit the French Quarter someday.

This is a rental car rant

Every single Turo I have seen here has like up to 150 miles a day or something like that. Maybe they just don't want people to rent a car for a 3 day drive from San Francisco to San Diego and back, with a round trip of 800 miles. I can see some owners are just leasing a car for Turo and that can...

This is a rental car rant

I typically found better experience with rental companies than individual mom and pop Turo owners. I like that the choice can be more specific in Turo but I don't like the mileage limit and the cleaning fee. When I rent from large companies they tend to be able to absorb risks that can be...

    3-Row SUV for Midlife Crisis

Nice choice. I think this is probably the best if not the only vehicle that met all your desire as a compromise. 24mpg is good enough for daily in and Lexus hopefully will have enough durability and quality service if things go wrong (they took my engine out to replace all the pistons + rings at...

    3-Row SUV for Midlife Crisis

People get disappointed when their expectation aren't met. The higher the price tag the higher the expectation.

Switching from 0w-20 to 0w-30 experience

Not sure about your engine specifically but I remember some research / marketing document that said 5w20 vs 5w30 and 5w30 vs 10w30 is about 1.5% mpg difference MAX in the lab. I would imagine real world difference would likely be even less than that since engine are even less likely to operate...

Negative experience with EBC Ultimax2 Brake Pads

I used Axxis / EBC ultimate around 15-20 years ago, same experience as your 1) and 3). It is a pad with a lot of bite and squeal, chew through rotors, but the bite "feels" great. I won't use it again due to the dust and how fast it chew through the rotors.

Compact spare on FWD car drive axle?

This works if they front and rear are the same size. Some cars they aren't. I personally would not do this if I'm not going to drive highspeed afterward (local only, or below speed limit till I got home). If I'm on a road trip 500 miles from home I would put them in the rear whether the manual...

    Non-public policing

So this is like corporate hired arm security? Like those armed money transportation services with guns and armored vehicles? I think the biggest concern would be whether they cost more than the protection is worth and whether they can be sued if they shot someone and how much the insurance...

How long do lower ball joints last?

This. Mine on the 97 Integra with 280K miles are still original. It was just commuting in the last 28 years. Mine on the Corolla also lasted till we crushed it at 240k and 24 years.
