Possibly unpopular opinion but I would run a flush or cleaning product through it and change the oil and see if there are any changes before potentially pulling the engine and removing cam carrier to replace avcs screen filter. OP, does the oil fill hole or anything else suggest a cleanliness issue?

TiGeo do you have a smoke machine? It would help you isolate some intake leaks or vacuum leaks you would not easily notice otherwise.

I service many FB25 engines and use Mobil 1 0w40 without question to help with oil consumption

He's coming up on another 20k+ oil change after thanksgiving and there has been less oil consumption this round. His driving has been less this year than others. Due to where he lives it's a mix of highway and lots of rural hilly open road. Will post when uoa is available.

The sohc ej253 in the 2010-2012 outback and legacy uses different MLS head gaskets, has a redesigned cylinder head and when the gaskets leak it is usually internal combustion to coolant. Not to be confused with the other versions of sohc ej25 which usually leak oil and coolant externally...

Take a good sniff of the coolant overflow bottle and if it smells like uncatted exhaust theres a good chance some amount of combustion gases are making it into the cooling system

That is incorrect. Especially for the 2010-2012 outback and legacy where they usually leak internally combustion gases to coolant without leaking externally oil or coolant.

I would find out and ask the right questions to find out if it has had a short block replacement and if the previous owners have been good about keeping oil topped off as the 2011-2013 Forester version of the FB25 does not have a low oil level light and only has a low pressure light.

My subaru FB25 runs anywhere from 195-235 highway based on ambient temp. Higher on mountain passes and lower during low speed rural. Could be 230 highway and drops to 210 in traffic.

mostly rural backroads and highway. Sometimes short trips but not usually. I'd say 10 percent city 90 percent open road of varying speed.

Recently switched over to HPL differential life 75w90. Previously used Mobil or valvoline synthetic 75w90 and Liqui Moly Mos2 for gears LM2019 additive. So far enjoying the shift feel with HPL.
