Keeping a vehicle for the long haul…oil choice

Given the demise of many engines can be cleanliness related in the long haul, an oil like Valvoline restore and protect, HPL, M1 0w40, ESP comes to mind

2015 Subaru 2.0 Head Gasket Failure at 136K Miles

It could have been the pcv union piece under the AC compressor. Depending how much coolant was in the oil, this could be inexpensive back on the road

Reasons NOT to use Kirkland 0w-20 or 5W-30 Synthetic...?

I think that long term engine cleanliness is most important. An oil known for cleanliness or an oil changing pattern or oil that promotes cleanliness as long as possible is beneficial if owning the vehicle long term. If Kirkland 5w30 at shorter intervals kept deposits from piston rings I...

Valvoline R&P Oil Burner Test Results

I take care of a few direct injection fb25 with over 150k and no significant consumption. All with m1 0w40 now on VRP and no varnish visible through fill hole. I take care of 1 with consumption 1 at per 6,000 and it had bulk 0w20 till 100k now 130k and significant varnish visible in oil fill...

Valvoline R&P Oil Burner Test Results

bit of an unusual horror story from some very good elder friends. Their 2018 FB25 outback lost all its oil from sudden consumption (it didnt consume any measurable amount previously and they did check it before any kind of trips) with 98k. The oil level had been checked 1 month earlier. The car...

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

Purely speculation without any before or after pictures, but I've seen the inside of the (metal) intake manifold with the throttle body removed on 2 egr equipped subarus I care for, running VRP and noticed the usual puddle of oil at the bottom of the intake manifold, but also very shiny metal...

Which oil next? Experiment on 2018 Outback

I will elaborate on my previous vote for m1 esp 0w30. This should happen after the consumption stabilizes from VRP. So similar consumption with VRP and then experimenting with others for interval 5, 6?

Which oil next? Experiment on 2018 Outback

M1 ESP 0W30 Years ago I had my buddy run this in a total beater Subaru EJ253 Legacy cvt and it completely halted the oil consumption after many oil changes. Probably 100k miles worth of 10k oil changes and redline daily. EJ253 having larger oil ring spaces than the FB, it was still impressive...

Why not use Valvoline R&P as the "forever oil"?

I am no expert whatsoever but I remember reading somewhere that tbn is not necessarily a variable by itself to determine oil longevity.

Why not use Valvoline R&P as the "forever oil"?

Since VRP will clean deposits which extended intervals can cause, what is the weak link of this oil in an extended interval? - would be the answer to why not to use VRP in a vehicle doing extended, or normal intervals.

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

I think that's just free oil in the picture too. No deposits or staining there wish flashlight on it. I was very impressed. I'm not regretting coverting the 40+ subarus I take care of to this and HPL. Wish it was available in 40 grade.

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

A neighbors 2019 Subaru Outback FB25 on its 2nd interval of VRP. I have no before pictures, there was normal light varnish in the cap and filler.

2024 crosstrek burning oil after 1k mi on oil change

As the owner of a manual transmission FB25 subaru I have spent lots of time considering this and I believe the answer has to do with what can be seen from the calculated load. The cvt vehicles keep calculated load while accelerating or building momentum at 80-99 percent very well, and even...

Subaru Filters Upside down harmful on Starts?

Whatever the demise of this engine is, I will be sure to let the board know. When it fails I will rebuild if possible or replace it. This is my forever car. In the mean time I am enjoying the oversize oil filter options, and shorter chain tensioner rattle on startup the Baxter valve is...

Subaru Filters Upside down harmful on Starts?

I installed the Baxter Anti Drain valve on my 2018 Forester FB25 which has a chain tensioner noise on startup since new. The pretensioner adjustment is likely not correct so it rattles until it has oil pressure. The baxter valve has reduced the startup rattle duration by at least half. So it...

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

Not sure when they will be. Probably next timing belt or head gasket repair whenever that comes. Unless there is large interest and I convince the owners to let me take the timing belt stuff off to get the pictures again.

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

Here are sideview pictures of lower part of cylinder 1 piston in a 2007 Subaru Forester EJ253 as viewed through the wrist pin access hole. Vehicle has 122,000 miles and is on its second interval of VRP. Vehicle was purchased used by current owners and was bought from elderly owners who only...
