The Second Golden Age of Horsepower

Gentlemen, don't forget about torque. Especially on a 0-60 romp, torque, and when it starts coming on, is more important than max BHP a lot of the time. Losing a couple car lengths right off the line is really hard to make up. Horsepower, at least on a car, is a bigger factor once you start...

why extra tire mounting fee for TPS

Actually a lot them do have a hold down nut on the outer stem. On quite a few (but not all), that is all that holds the TPS on the wheel. I guess in that sense, they are "bolted through". But you have to dismount the tire to replace or service a TPS.

why extra tire mounting fee for TPS

And if the TPS is more than 5 or 6 years old, it's probably a good idea to think about new ones (or new batteries if available) at re-tire time. Otherwise, there's a chance the TPS batteries will expire before the tires do.

Car battery completely drained - Too late to save?

Just a word of warning. If the battery has truly been discharged beyond adequate recovery, continuing to drive on it is only going to overstress the alternator. A new battery is cheap compared to an alternator. Once you discharge a flooded acid below about 1.1 specific gravity, sulfation starts...

    best brand ac compressor?

No. As long as it is tight, filled with desiccant, and fits, you can use a reputable AM drier. Don't forget to equalize the oil charge with new parts. Too much, and cooling efficiency drops. Too little, and the compressor is placed at risk.

Opinion on a quarter century old BMW 850i (E31)

And Vikas, it's 77F and magnificently sunny here today. I'd be grabbing the keys to the SL before those for the 850 on a day like today. This year, repairs (none) and maintenance have totaled under $250 on it. It's biggest expense right now is insurance.

Opinion on a quarter century old BMW 850i (E31)

As lovely as the 850i is, it is not a track car, but a powerful grand tourer with a sporty streak. It is too heavy for its engine to make up the mass difference. It is also a bit too nose heavy for serious tracking. So, a car like a Supra TT, and quite a few other lighter cars, some with less...

Opinion on a quarter century old BMW 850i (E31)

My recollection of this car is that it was difficult to repair and required repair more often than the typical BMW of its era. Worse than the Merc V-12. I agree with the others that this was a poster child for complex German electricals. Parts are reasonable (relatively), but outside labor (and...

    best brand ac compressor?

Too many issues with remanufactured compressors these days - go with new. I'll even take a first-quality boneyard pull over a reman. The OE is usually best for "quality that lasts", but pricey. Protect your investment. Always replace the drier with any major component replacement.
