Differential fluid recommendation for Toyota and Nissan

Diffs are easy but what's in the Rogue (CVT) tranny? I have a few years of experience and heartbreak with the older Jatco CVTs.

2017 c220d ... Thicker transmission fluid to help with gearbox issue?

I would not recommend any Dex/Merc fluid unless it was for a crude / low-stress environment like a floor / hydraulic jack or maybe a log-splitter. Anything I put in a modern vehicle is going to be fairly high grade (synthetic).

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

I am interested to hear about the Valvoline issue as that would probably be my first choice if it were cost-effective. I would chose the 75w85 but would rather the 75w90.

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

The differential is a hypoid gearbox with/without limited-slip function or possibly clutches. The transmission is also a gearbox as is the transfer case/box found in 4wd/AWD such as BMW X-Drive.

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

The viscosity is something you can play with. If you were to test out different viscosity of GL5 (75w80/85/90/110/140) you would likely notice a few things. The temperature of the diff fluid (higher viscosity = higher temperature), fuel efficiency (higher viscosity = lower fuel economy) and wear...

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

I would look at what they're using at the track for that gearbox. How many models use that drive-train? If it were mine I would not use a 75w80 as fuel efficiency is not my top priority, making things work well and last long is. I would upgrade to a 75w85 or 75w90 from Red Line, Amsoil, HPS, or...

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

It's the truth though if you think a compatible fluid is going to destroy your gearbox.

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

There was a material or assembly problem in those OE gearboxes that was leading to chronic, early, failure. I don't know if BMW owned up to it yet or released any TSBs on the matter but that's where I'd start looking. Sometimes it's cheaper just to ignore the problem and pay out the failures...

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

And that is exactly the wrong conclusion which helps spread misinfomation and stunts understanding. Consider such Classic Hits like: - battery on concrete gets drained / wrecked - don't change your old, black ATF or you'll destroy the transmission - synthetic engine oil causes leaks ... and...

    Differential Oil Selection Confusion

I had the same reaction, similar to CarCareNut advising AGAINST clean AT fluid. Can't fight it, just post, unsubscribe and move on. There are so many techs out there that do the work but don't really understand what's going on. Many of those seem to love talking about how much they don't quite...

ATF change in GM 10 Speed

The viscosity argument makes very little sense when you put it that way. There is nothing in these transmissions that is "absolutely perfect" and they are very tolerant (or should be programmed to) conditions beyond "just right". How does the viscosity of an ULV fluid at 40C compare to a Dex6...

ATF change in GM 10 Speed

There was Dexron, II, III, and VI in the past and we tend to refer them as 1,2,3 and 6 for ease of communication. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEXRON

ATF change in GM 10 Speed

I believe the answer is fuel economy and the related sales boost. I would love to know more.

There is no correlation between HTHS viscosity and ring wear?

ATF change in GM 10 Speed

If I bought a vehicle that came with a ULV / LV ATF I would swap it out (with a pan drop to inspect & clean magnets), probably with Valvoline Maxlife ATF as it's the most cost effective / available to me. Amsoil if I had the cash to spare. I would NOT run any transmission with an ULV fluid just...

    Valvoline R&P 0w-20 7,000mi OCI 2022 Toyota Camry 2.5L 109,000 Miles

I would look at the cost just to replace the piston rings. Pay more in fuel or pay more in labour? On the other hand, if you're going to change rings I would probably do a whole re-seal, plus, plus, plus "while you're in there". $$$$

    Valvoline R&P 0w-20 7,000mi OCI 2022 Toyota Camry 2.5L 109,000 Miles

Per Valvoline documentation, it is to be used according to the mfg recommended service intervals. So if your OCI monitor says it's time to change at 9k, then that's when you should change it. Of course, none of mfg service suggestions will be as useful as active testing.

    Valvoline R&P 0w-20 7,000mi OCI 2022 Toyota Camry 2.5L 109,000 Miles

If I recall correctly (I'm not interested in digging it up), he was referring to AT maintenance intervals, etc. The point he was making was that you do NOT want the transmission or fluid CLEAN because that will cause problems with shifting, etc. I have a significant history of talking and...
