Only if you're running a filter having media made of cellulose. Otherwise, you risk cross-contamination.

Is a VOA a necessity before doing UOA?

I'm a total noob, but I've learned that different labs may use different test methods, e.g. ICP vs RDE for elemental analysis, so the results may be different from one lab to another. Generally speaking, pick a lab and stick with them so you're comparing apples-to-apples.

    What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

I was brand new to BITOG during this period and have since learned immensely. Even in emails with LSJr, he drove home this exact point, emphasizing VOA lets you know what a specific oil should look like from a specific lab so when you do UOA, you can start building a database for your specific...

    What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

The oil was received from Blauparts on Mar 27, 2025, so shouldn't have been an older formulation. I even sent an email to Ravenol asking about the product based on the VOA sample results and received this reply May 8th. They didn't deny what the VOA showed.

    3-Row SUV for Midlife Crisis

That's assuming there are no flight delays, which are becoming more common. Our daughter, trying to get home from Westchester County (NY) to Madison last month, didn't get home until 24 hours after scheduled. Her initial flight was delayed which caused her to miss the connecting flight. Spent...

Great skills to be teaching our youth, and great opportunity to build stronger bonds with your stepson. You done good. My oldest stepdaughter learned how to drive a tractor, run cut-off saws, nail guns, etc. She helped build a cabin on some property we used to own. Hard worker. Still is, just...

Thoughts on the Acura MDX ?

We seriously considered one when deciding to get rid of the Audi Q5. The MDX is a wonderful vehicle and has all the bells and whistles, but we were making a conscious decision to get away from as many bells and whistles as reasonably possible, so bought the Pilot Elite. No regrets. Or as some...

Those would be good buying options to have receipts proving you're using the correct manufacturer viscosity and certifications. Just saying.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

I'm giving Toyota credit for falling less than their competitors, e.g. Honda, Subaru, etc. (and I just bought a Honda).

    What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

In my quest to find "the best" 508.00/509.00 spec oil, I sent several brands for VOAs. Ravenol VSE came back with almost 2095ppm Calcium and 203ppm Silicon, which puts using it at a higher risk for LSPI.

The Genesis is Gone - Farewell and Good Riddance

^^^This^^^ I had a 2002 Ram 1500 that the fan for the ac cooler when out on, twice. Each time the ac would blow cold until stopping, then hot air. I got the fan with shroud from a part's store nearby fairly cheap. It was working good when I sold it to my neighbor in 2020 at 185k miles. One of...

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

The Honda owner's manual specifically states you can use a synthetic oil if it is labeled with the API Certification Seal. Amsoil and HPL do not have the seal, but "meets or exceeds" the API specs. Should this cause concern under warranty? My understanding of the Magnuson-Moss Act is that the...

Average car Overfilled 1 qt. anyone ever see this cause a problem?

These crazy Russians decided to see (literally) what happens if you overfill engine oil, so they cut the side out of a block, replaced the side with a see-through "window", then fabricated a transparent oil pan. They started testing with the oil at the fill line on the dipstick, then doubled the...

The market has definitely softened, some areas more than others. In our neighborhood, houses are taking much longer to sell and usually there's a price drop to the listing along the way.

    Lets talk about new vehicles

I guess we can't complain too loudly around here. I use QT because they are Top Tier and convenient. Regular unleaded since the Pilot is fine with 87 octane. The station closest to me is significantly higher than the other two, but it's their newest location right off the interstate.
