Is a VOA a necessity before doing UOA?

I'm new to this forum (not the world) and testing of motor oils. Members here have caught errors on two of my UOA results, which the lab then corrected. Post the VOA and UOAs you receive and you'll get experienced eyes looking them over, catching potential anomalies.

Mileage remaining after fuel tank refill - Chevy Traverse

Welcome, Mark. Where are you from? My experience has been the calculated miles on a fill-up is based on the previous average mpg which was based on the style of driving during the last tank. Once you've driven some on the new tank, the mpg are being recalculated and the remaining...

F-150 payload and towing; within limits?

Here's a short video showing the effects of trailer weight distribution. No talking, just annoying music, but it doesn't last long.

F-150 payload and towing; within limits?

GVWR is the base weight of a vehicle, plus accessories, plus passengers, plus any other items, plus the tongue weight. Payload is the total weight a truck can safely carry, including passengers and other stuff in the cab and bed, plug trailer tongue weight. It's calculated by subtracting the...

F-150 payload and towing; within limits?

Even with the "beer cooler" at the tongue of the trailer, the pallet jack looks to be more to the rear of the box it's on top of (plus the aforementioned being on top, making the CG quite high).

In praise of the cartridge oil filter

My concern with changing the Audi's cartridge filter was the housing being made from high-tech plastic, The potential for cross-threading was higher. Should the assembly crack below the top cap, the replacement cost was quite high. It was recommended to keep a replacement top cap, just in case...

Are German cars safer than Japanese or American cars?

My lack of confidence in the Pilot is mostly due to the OEM tires. Bridgestone Alenza vs Continental Extreme Contact DWS06+. With only a few thousand miles on the Bridgestones, I can't quite justify spending $1200 on the Contis for the Pilot, yet.

Is a VOA a necessity before doing UOA?

In this thread, VOAs of HPL's PPPCMO shows aluminum at 9-14ppm from two different labs. Without this knowledge and performing a UOA, you might think there's some wearing of aluminum parts going on. Having the baseline, you can start by subtracting the values from the VOA from the values in the...

Are German cars safer than Japanese or American cars?

I had more confidence in the capabilities of the Audi compared to the Honda Pilot, especially handling and shear acceleration and braking. Both are highly rated in crash testing.

London West End Musicals in September

I will be in London the middle of September and want to catch two or three West End shows. My wife won't be with me this time, so I'm free to do what I want  . When we travel together, she picks the shows, often buying tickets the day-of for quite a discount. The only tickets I've...

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

I'm typically not the best record-keeper, but in one of Car Wizard's YouTube videos, he had a customer whose car had over 200k miles in less than two years. The customer kept a three-ring binder with receipts for everything ever done to that car related to maintenance. I started doing that with...

    Supertech filters discontinued?

If this thread was started to bait me into mentioning Pentius UFXL, it worked. They are virtually identical to the Premium Guard-style, are manufactured in South Korea, and cost ~$5 on Amazon when purchased by the 12-pack case.

Valvoline Advanced on sale at WM

I just posted in another thread on how to use Carfax to track your DIY service. It does not require an app. You can use a browser to access. Depending on your brand, like my Honda, it allows you to insert your own records in MyGarage, which then are visible to Honda service. I update both as I...

This is what the Carfax dashboard looks like. You can change the intervals to match your planned service schedule. I haven't changed the "favorite shop", so it's showing the dealership where it was purchased. Carfax will email you if a recall is found on your vehicle. When I had the Audi, I...

As a DIYer, Carfax allows you to go into their system and add records. You can upload receipts, make notes, etc. This becomes part of the vehicles record. You can also edit or delete records.
