    Magnefine Cures Shifting Problem

    0W40 Can Ruin A 5W20/5W30 Oil Spec'd Engine?

Some of you may remember my oil filter bypass test of years ago. They may be still here. I noted the increased significant likelihood of bypass, especially on cold starts, or cool oil WOT, when using the 10W30 but only in very cold conditions with 5W20 combined with hi revs. Only when the oil was...

    Magnefine Cures Shifting Problem

Thanks for posting that GM info! I had not seen that. Next time I drop the pan, I'll add a magnet too. Have several from old Magnefines and they are suitable. It's really a pretty good gearbox overall but you can kill it quickly letting it slip and bump too long.

    Rate My Filter

Was this engine modified to increase airflow? If so, you are trying to pull more air thru than the filter was designed to carry, especially when dirty. Did the filter get wet at some point? Getting a cellulose filter wet will significantly reduce airflow capacity and cause it to fail if you...

    Magnefine Cures Shifting Problem

Have an '08 Chevy Uplander as a work schlepper. It has the 4T65E transaxle in one of it's final applications. It is somewhat notorious for a condition called "slip and bump," whereby one of the mainline solenoids is slow to respond and on acceleration from a stop the trans slips for a second due...

More evidence that most oil is underutilized. DN is also the poster child of the "less-is-more" philosophy. If you can do this with "ordinary" conventionals, what happens when you go to the higher shelf oils?

Blowing out a filter does not work.

IMO, the decision on cleaning a filter should be done on a case by case basis. Many if not most of the PC filters are not nearly robust enough to get away with it... blowing... I mean, but it may be possible to gently hoover or use some other means. Some of my tractor filters are and are...

    Chevron Article on Bypass Systems

My Take: As engines improve in their design and construction, as lubricants and fuels improve, as the standard air and oil filtration systems improve in efficiency, the need for bypass systems is reduced and the cost effectiveness of installing one moves is reduced. The Chevron test was not...

Fresh Oil = Stripped AW ???

A lot of assumptions here made by people who have not read the paper (and there are other similar ones) or heard a real tribologist talk about it. You can't debate what you haven't read.

Should you ever change your air filter?

Interesting question. I don't know for sure. Possibly you could interpret from MAP readings if you knew the values at full throttle with a clean filter. Possibly the same from MAF. It could be figured out but with easy access to inexpensive restriction gauges, why bother unless it just wasn't...

    5hp19 torque convertor shudder?

That is called hysteresis. A "shudder" is something different. Hysteresis is often an adjustment. I don't know your car at all but I have experienced it on vehicles where the TV (throttle valve) cable is misadjusted on cars so equipped. It could also happen if the PCM programming is off for...

Yeah, I agree. rubber-to-metal with plenty of spring pressure is enough to keep oil from slipping by the combo valve. This filter appears to have held up well in the short term use for which it was intended. I would advise treading very lightly when it comes to extended use, as the design of the...
