    Pyramid of Intellect...

I used to tune carbs decades ago either using carb sticks (Morgan I think) or gauges on motorcycles. There's nothing better than a 1000cc 4cyl engine that's in perfect tune throughout the rev band.

What are you doing right now?

Getting ready for another trip to Australia to visit our daughter, son in law and 2 grand kids (daughter had the second baby about a month ago). And now I'm arguing with my wife about how many pairs of shoes she has packed (I have 2 pairs total and I'm wearing one). At this time the weather is...

what are your thoughts on a 2024 new Mitsubishi outlander sport trail edition?

Yeah- my '12 Rav4 only has a bit of undercarriage rust, nothing on the door seams, kick panels, fenders, etc. My brother-in-law's '18 Mazda CX-5 is getting rust on the rear liftgate. So far our '18 Equinox has been rust free so far living here in MN.

    Turbo prop section of airport

The last 2 turboprops that I remember being on was a Fokker F-27 (Ozark) and a Dash-7 (Hawaiian Airlines?) back in the 80's. I wouldn't mind flying on a Q400 or a Saab just for giggles.

Toyota Corolla.2017 strut/shock replacement best buy?

Are you positive the springs are shot too? The OEM front struts and rear shocks on my '12 Rav4 lasted to 168,000 miles before needing replacement and I kept the stock springs. I used KYB struts and shocks.

Dealing with step inline without smoking transmission or brakes on an SUV

Somewhat off topic but I'm not impressed with the Element 3 rotors. I had to have them turned once after 20,000 miles and now I'm looking to replace them (12,000 since they were machined) at about 32,000 miles since I installed them. Last set of Autozone rotors went almost 100k before I...

Post your latest oil purchase or even filter.

2018 Equinox 1.5L turbo: Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 with a MicroGard filter from O'Reilly Auto Parts. Last OC was January 4th and this change had 5,661 miles since the previous OC with the oil life monitor at 25%. I thought I had a couple AC Delco PF64 filters at the cabin garage but I must have...

    Car shopping with your Dad

My mom used to have a '72 or '74 B210 painted Denver Bronco orange with a 4 speed stick. First car I learned to drive with.

What are you working on today?

Checking the valves clearances on Old Blue (1988 Sentra) because a few weeks ago she started making a lot of racket under the hood and was loosing power. All 8 valves were extremely tight which is weird. I don't see anything broken. According to the records my dad kept a shop replaced the rocker...

    How to document oil changes

I've been documenting oil changes with a photo of the filter and oil jug with the hood open, and using whatever photo processing program you use to insert text of the mileage and date, such as this beauty on my dad's daily driver 1987 Saab 9000 Turbo: I then enter all the info on a MS Word...

What are you working on today?

Ha! It definitely gets attention. I haven't had it out much this year but back when it was in Colorado my dad and I almost always were stopped at the grocery store parking lot with folks asking questions about it. Quite a few offers to buy it on the spot. I'm trying to figure out how many...

What are you working on today?

Finally got around to replacing the wrongly installed left rear strut on the 1988 Nissan Wagon (story here:) I installed the left strut (Tokico brand) and that went well. The right side was about 1/2" short so I put back the original Nissan OEM strut (it was replaced sometime in 2007 and only...

    2012 Rav4 V6 alternator replacement cost

A week old. I think the alternator wasn't charging the battery even though the warning light on the dash wasn't lit up. I did trickle charge the battery for 48 hours and had it load tested and it was fine.

    2012 Rav4 V6 alternator replacement cost

The alternator went kaput last week at 185,000 miles and had the car towed to a local shop that I've been going to for the last 20+ years. I don't think I've could have done this myself as the radiator needed to be moved/removed and the AC system evacuated and recharged. This was the first...

    New battery for my 2012 Rav4 V6

As far as I know (and what others have posted on the Rav4World site) the 3rd Gen Ravs generally are pretty easy on the battery. But since I live in Minnesota we get hot summers and cold winters. I've used felt protectors in the past and I haven't had any issues with them yet.
