We didn't have the internet back then to easily do research and debunk these kind of claims. I remember my dad fell for it too, and he's a smart guy.

I might be overly paranoid - I just bought the car and for preventive measure I immediately had the timing belt and water pump, etc., replaced. Shortly after, apparently the the distributor failed (car ran when it was replaced). Afterwards it had an idle problem, occasionally felt like misfiring...
