Those TBN and TAN numbers don't look much different than the ones I got with 5k miles on low SAPS Castrol LL03 in my 2.0T. Makes me think these DI engines are just hard on oil in that regard.

I had two 1.8T cars (2004 A4 and a 2000 Jetta) and put about 250K miles on them between the two, all with a performance chip. GC 0W-30 worked the best (fuel mileage, engine noise and consumption) and M1 0W-40 was OK as well. OEM filter, 5K mile OCI.

    Tuned VAG 2.0 TFSI

Given that you're in the UK and don't have the same gasoline formulation concerns that we have here in the US ... I would use a 504 oil, which will minimize the intake valve deposits. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

The only Mobil 1 5W-30 product sold in the U.S. that could possibly fit this description is the ESP. It does meet VW 504/507 and would be acceptable for use in your car. Is your 4.2 a direct injection engine? If not, I would just stick with a 502 oil like the M1 0W-40 you've already been using.
