SAE Paper on Engine Wear with 20 wt. oil

The 5.7 liter Hemi V8 engine has been around for 20 years now, first debuting in 2002 as a 2003 model. Over the years, it has only been updated twice, in 2009 to add cylinder deactivation and in roughly 2018 or thereabouts to add a mild-hybrid system. Otherwise the engine itself hasn’t really...

    E-15 rule to be waived

I saw "Super 88" once. I was in southwestern PA and I stopped at a Sheetz station. I had no idea what Super 88 was so I had to Google it. I was under the impression that the presidential order allows stations that used to all sell E10 to now sell E15? Is that not what happened? In other...

    E-15 rule to be waived

The problem where I drive (IN, KY, TN) is that the pumps aren't marked. There is NO WAY that I'm aware of to have any idea what is being dispensed. I've never seen a sign that says "E15 with this selection" or "This fuel contains no ethanol". It's just impossible to know what you're actually...

    Best Oil for 5.0L Coyote

Best oil for the 5.0? Well I always thought it was interesting that the 5.0 in the Mustang with Track Pack called for 5W50 oil, similar to the oil spec for the engine in the GT500 cars. Did Ford assume that Track Pack cars would be driven harder, generate more heat, and benefit from higher...

Can oil grade impact cam phasing?

The P-star, like many other engines in domestic vehicles over the last 15-20 years, was originally spec'd with 5W30 oil and then the SPEC was changed, not the engine, in later years. Everybody already knows that the "thin" oils are being used for CAFE reasons and to save the automaker money...

    Thoughts on Super Tech?

I see the sarcasm you guys are trying to project. Unfortunately you're wrong because if you watch Gale Banks' recent visits to the Amsoil test lab you'll see that they do things the exact same way....they just use much more expensive equipment to do it.

    Thoughts on Super Tech?

Yeah I'll never forget all those tests Project Farm did on YouTube where the Amazon Basics oil (same as SuperTech) pretty much outperformed most of the much more expensive oils. That is some good oil for a great price.

    Rotella 15w40 T4, T5, or T6???

What's up with the T6 shortage? Guys online are saying they can't find any. I went to my Walmart and the shelves were indeed bare. Apparently there's a national shortage of T6. Anybody have info on when this may be resolved?

Towing with GM Light Duty 3.0L diesel

If a 30 shears to a 20, what does a 20 shear down to? Hmmm... I never have and never will put 16 or 20 weight oils in an engine of mine. The automaker may care about 0.002 MPG for CAFE scores, but I don't. I want longevity.

Towing with GM Light Duty 3.0L diesel

Well the GM engine is garbage too. Pages and pages of problems on their forums and social media owners groups. Typical GM engineering... and somebody already mentioned that timing belt for the oil pump that you can't get to unless the remainder of the driveline is removed from the truck. So...

Towing with GM Light Duty 3.0L diesel

I remember when Ram tried 30w oils in their 3.0L diesel. Let's just say it didn't go well. Ended up having abnormally high failure rate as the miles and years went by. So then they changed the SPEC, not the engine, but the spec to a 40w oil on those to combat the issue. Now, the new Gen 3...

    Milkshake Oil - Ram Ecodiesel

This is also incorrect. The Gen 3 filter has a redesigned relief valve inside. Dealers were sent a TSB that stated in bold writing DO NOT USE A GEN 2 FILTER ON A GEN 3 ENGINE. But if you are a technician with "extensive training from Chrysler" then I'm sure you've already seen this, right...

    Milkshake Oil - Ram Ecodiesel

"Tweaks" equals new. They literally changed the parts. Why are other techs with "extensive training from Chrysler" saying exactly the opposite about this engine, and showing evidence? Everything FCA told us during the product launch has been seen in photos and explanations from technicians...

    Milkshake Oil - Ram Ecodiesel

The bottom end is new, even down to the pistons and rings. The top end is new. The turbo, EGR system, emissions, all of it is new. FCA claimed in all of their press materials that it's an 80% new engine, and I don't have any reason to doubt that. Even the engine pressures are different...

Diesel 5w-40 Oil vs Euro Diesel 5w-40

Yeah I saw a guy with experience as a dealer technician talk about that on an EcoDiesel owners group page on FB this morning. He said that they apparently discussed it in a recent MasterTech article. Claimed that the Rotella T6 oil can't handle the engine pressures and tends to coke up on the...

Diesel 5w-40 Oil vs Euro Diesel 5w-40

How does engine condition and rate of wear differ? I thought the level of wear is the thing that determined engine condition.
