Are synthetic worth the money?

quote:
It is the total cost of the oil change that I am comparing. It wouldn't be a fair cost comparison if I showed a lower cost for oil alone and the total real cost was higher because of the filters. If you like you can reuse the old filter twice to cut costs if you want it...

    Are synthetic worth the money?

quote:
Originally posted by wulimaster: With a typical gallon of 15w40 running around $6.50 and a best price on motocraft filter of $9.50 you would pay about $142 + tax on the full $142 for dino to complete 20,000 miles.

I'm sorry but, this...

    5W30 or 10W30?

quote:
Originally posted by TallPaul: If I expected this to happen I think I would want Redline Oil in my crankcase. What grades are listed in your owner's manual? That is always a good place to start. I do feel that a 10wXX is the way to go, probably a 10w30. How...

    5W30 or 10W30?

As a person who spends a lot of time driving in FLA, here are my concerns about viscosity: Say you are using this 5w30 in 90F air temps and it has sheared down to a 20w. Now at the same time your AC compressor and or water pump start to fail, and the engine is running super hot so your temp...

    Oil filter SCAMS

Are there still any TV repairmen left in business? I agree when name-branded companies use a cheaper and more shoddy manufacturer, under it's own label---the consumer is the one that loses. Most people buy the brands they know, they don't always check for quality. [ August 29, 2004...

    Amsoil 5w-30 + 15w-40 50/50 mix?

quote:
Originally posted by Pablo: If one of the worries is the lab won't have a baseline, you can send a virgin blend in, but honestly with the $20 analysis it doesn't matter much and if you are really that worried send them through Terry. <hr...

This will drive you maintenance guys nuts

If you are going to have a fluid replacement machine service, I would first ask if they intend to replace the filter and clean the pan magnets. Many dealers will try to skip this step or even tell you "there is no filter" on this tranny, and that a flush is sufficient. It is not!

Pentosin ATF1 labeled a Group IV!

Is the ESSO formula at least a hydrocracked Group III then?

Pentosin ATF1 labeled a Group IV!

Quoted: As for the VW transmissions, the old 096 transmission was the last to use Dexron 3. O1M's and 01P's (heavy T4 chassis VW trucks/Vans) were filled with VW lifetime fill starting way back in 1996. So you are saying that the VW Lifetime fluid is Esso LT71141?

Pentosin ATF1 labeled a Group IV!

While I am aware of Esso LT71141 being used in some VW models, the 01M Tranny in MkIII and MkIV Jetta's and Golf's was "made" into a "lifetime" (read; no service, no dipstick)transmission by switching to a synthetic blend fluid made by Pentosin as was the radiator coolant. Prior 01M's used dino...

Pentosin ATF1 labeled a Group IV!

I think I and another dub may have stumbled on to this confusion about the ingredients of Pentosin ATF---there is the ATF1 which is a PAO, and an ATF Form 2D which is likely the one that is packaged as VW label. This is the product data of ATF2D, their site says nothing about the ATF1 I saw for...

Pentosin ATF1 labeled a Group IV!

I recently did an ATF service on a new rebilt 01M tranny for my VW Jetta using Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle Formula ATF as a substitute for factory fill Pentosin. After reading many opinions and talking to several mechs, I began to wonder about the Pentosin ATF which has been called either a synthetic...
