Buying Oil At Wal-Mart VS Part Stores

I buy all oil/filters at Menards since I don't require anything special and with rebates overall prices can be very low. I try to buy as little at WM as possible. *insert lump here*

Another killed in a Honda with Takata airbag

Checked on our '04 Civic we bought earlier this year and found it needing the passenger airbag recall done. I called our local dealer on Friday (5th), they set us up for an appointment today. In and out within 45 minutes. Not bad.

    traces of oil in coolant

A/C systems aren't tied into the radiator... but the auto transmission usually has a cooler in the end-tanks. Chances are that's just old coolant. Change it out, run a UOA and keep and eye on it. Oil in the coolant is real bad for the hoses. It breaks them down and eventually they will...

    Changing radiator cap as PM

If it passes the hose "squeeze test" I leave it alone, although on our older cars maybe it's not such a bad idea. I have had one fail that vented coolant OK, but then on cool-down wouldn't let liquid back in, causing issues.

    Thoughts on turning rotors

I had a set of rotors and pads for our Montana delivered to my door for $57. At that price there is no reason to bother with turning them.

    95 Caprice 5.7l LT1 55k- Valve cover- sludge!

It's surely not great, but if it runs good and doesn't make funny noises... what's done is done. Take care of it now and don't mess with any "quick fixes in a can" that can clog things up later..

    Premium gas

Somewhere around two-ish years ago, the base stock for our gasoline here in the mid-west (maybe farther?) changed from 87 to 84/5 octane. Many stations where you could previously get non-ethanol 87 are now E10 to raise the octane from 84 to 87. I read at the time, that they dropped the base...

    Highest mileage car you've bought?

We bought a 2003 Pontiac Montana last year with 243,xxx on it; for $800. Some rust as expected, small leak from the tranny, and needed intake gaskets. Did the gaskets myself, and the leak is so small we just top off with a half quart of fluid every four-to-six months of normal driving. That...

Are you the only neighbor who works on vehicles?

Mostly retired folk living on our circle, but I did see a guy down the block with the hood up on his Silverado the other day, so I guess I'm not the only one. Generally speaking though, I am the only one, or one of the few that do.

3rd time's the charm (Cruze water pump)?

The 1.4L in my wife's '14 Sonic has been leaking coolant for a year now. It's a slow leak, but the coolant is definitely going somewhere. Last year the dealer "couldn't find a leak". I've added coolant twice since then. I'm not taking that answer next time it goes in.
