Looking for a better alternative to Castrol EDGE 5w40

Unless you want to do extended drains I would go with whatever is cheapest.

    New GL-4 Oil

Thanks so much Molakule! By interchangeabiltiy, I mean, if my old Nissan truck specs a 75w-90 GL-4 and I put in a 70w-80 GL-4, am I creating a condition where more wear will occur. Or since they are both GL-4, should the same amount of wear occur reguardless of viscosity? Companies like...

    New GL-4 Oil

I'm intrigued by this. IE, if two fluids have GL-4 rating, but are much different viscosity, will they offer the same wear protection just at different cost and cold weather shift performance? Intuitively it seems making a 75w-90 GL-4 could cost much less (using lower grade fluid with fewer...

Super Tech Heavy Duty Tractor Hydraulic and Transmission Fluid now lists API GL-4 as a spec on the back of the bottle- link.

Best oil for Audi 4.0 twin turbo

Before the low saps craze, VW 503.01 was the Audi high horsepower turbo spec oil. I believe that spec is still listed on some oil containers today like Castrol 0w-30 and Mobil 1 0w-40.

    Who remembers Green GC 0w-30?

Haven't been on this site for a long time. I no longer have the '03 Passat V6 that I bought new, but this was the smoothest oil I ever tried in it. Bought a big stash and then sold off a lot of it to folks here. My engine just seemed more quiet and smooth at higher rpm's with this stuff...

Sig Sauer P320 will fire if dropped

Making the trigger lighter just means it will still fire when dropped, just from a greater height. So don't climb any ladders or trees.

How does Porsche A40 spec differ from VW502?

From that Lubrizol site, VW 504 looks the most impressive to me.

    75W-85 vs 75W-90 for MTF?

My take, which is probably wrong, is that today the base oils are so good that it no longer requires a 90w oil to achieve the GL-4 rating. When GL-4 was blended with group 1 many years ago, 90w was probably needed. Back then a 75w-90 would shear down faster than today. I may try to call...

    75W-85 vs 75W-90 for MTF?

Just curious, but since a gl-4 has half the ep additive of a gl-5, couldn't a 1:1 mixture of gl-5 gear oil and diesel engine oil of the same weight be mixed to create a gl-4?

What is the most stringent Euro specification now?

I think there's only one reason for this - money, as they're probably more profitable losing some customers driving older BMW's and using the newer base oil. Had BMW continued to use it at the dealers and as factory fill, I'm sure it would still meet the spec.

    New Mobil 1 FS 0w-40

I like the statement on the back "recommended for VW 503.01", which has been superseded ever since VW 504/507 came out probably 8 years ago. It was Audi's spec for extended drains in high horsepower turbo equipped motors. The 503.01 was full saps, whereas the newer VW 504 is mid or low saps...
