    3.1 Modem Reliability

Vyve Broadband is a very scuzzy operator that is typically at least one generation of equipment behind… the perks of them being the only choice for most of their customers. If I remember correctly, they didn’t have DOCSIS 3.1 going until pretty recently… and it’s definitely not mid or high...

    Do you use guest WiFi?

Eventually, network folks will realize that they’re doing more hurt than good… I’ll usually test the WiFi when I’m going somewhere and as soon as I see the 10mbps penalty box, it’s back to FirstNet “5G+”.

    Do you use guest WiFi?

Unless I have poor cell signal, I don't bother, as most businesses that offer guest networks arbitrarily slow them down to be useless, against best practice. They might have a 500mbps connection, but ratelimit to something ridiculous like 10mbps. This'll cause unnecessary load, driving up demand...

Shell selling Jiffy Lube to Monomoy Capital Partners

same here. All of the locations in my area (owned by Premium Velocity) just all got remodeled, complete with new Pennzoil and "multi care" signage. They are plentiful in Houston, too -- a little overpriced, but to be expected for fast charging.

    PC with 3 monitors

Out of curiosity, is this for ProPresenter or a similar graphics display platform? My church is a Mac shop, but we ended up putting a Blackmagic Deck Link card in our ProPresenter machine -- SDI out, and it will only output graphics from ProPresenter instead of the full MacOS (or Windows)...

Internet provider options what would you do?

Definitely a logical reason. It's baffling that the provider would charge you $68 for 500/500.... but at least the cellular service works well enough. We ended up going with 500mbps from Frontier at $29.99/mo... it's hilarious to see _actual_ usage over time. Our 95th %ile works out to 21Mbps...

    parking at Target

I tend to just park at the end of the row, saves time, and I can stand to get a few more steps in. What baffles me is how people are so lazy, they will sit in the middle of a parking lot, waiting for someone to back out. Take this aerial view from a grocery store near me: During rush hour...

Internet provider options what would you do?

I genuinely don't know why people choose to go with a cellular hotspot, if they have reasonably priced fiber available. In my case, I have three fiber operators and two coax operators available in my neighborhood... yet I often see neighbors with default TMOBILE or ATT SSIDs (AT&T is not our...

    bunch of home network/server/infrastructure changes

That HP is still a fantastic box -- my colo'd lab machine is pretty similar (same RAM and storage, even!)... just with dual E5-2697v4's, I am running ESXi instead of Hyper-V, and have 2x10G uplinks going to it, because you can never have enough bandwidth. Even with the obnoxious CPUs, my...

Which Dallas top BBQ restaurant has the most triggering name?

Hutchins is very good... I'm honestly surprised they are not on this list, along with Hard Eight.

Do you get or will you get a pension?

Started a new gig early last year at a state university, one of the big perks is that we participate in the state teacher retirement system, even in the IT department. I am younger (early 30s) so have a long time to go, but very glad to have a defined benefit as someone in the IT world, it's...

    Looking for a new TV

The Sonys we have both have ATSC 3.0 (Nextgen) support -- but I have no idea how well it works. We live about 60 miles as the crow flies from the TV and radio towers in Missouri City, TX -- so it is hard to get a usable TV signal without a gigantic antenna. We still (begrudgingly) pay for Dish...

    Looking for a new TV

Yet another +1 for Sony. On the larger end, we have an XR85X90K (85" full array LED) in our living room and it's great... on the smaller end, a XR48A90K (48" OLED) in the master bed, and while it doesn't get used nearly as much as initially expected, it's another spectacular set. We feed them...

    metronet is coming to town

Ha, small world... we were right off of County Line, and I went to the high school off of Ridge Rd. I haven't been back that way in a few years... my folks moved down here, so no real reason to. We had a cable modem for a while, think it was 3mbps?, then switched to 6mbps SBC DSL up until I...

    metronet is coming to town

If memory serves me right, Plainfield was their first town in Illinois... and my parents lived in an older part of Romeoville, had it installed in 2017. I'm honestly surprised that AT&T hasn't made any effort to deploy fiber in that area... I just looked up the last home I lived in up there...

    metronet is coming to town

My parents had MetroNet for quite a while when they still lived in IL (Romeoville) -- it's good service, reasonably priced, and reliable. They had a relatively low tier (200mbps, IIRC) and had no complaints, even as a non-technical user, while they had 1Gbps cable here and were disappointed with...

Help Me Pick an Oil Filter - 2018 Equinox

I'd go MicroGard or Carquest. We have a 2020 with the LYX and have nothing bad to say about either filter... doing 4K OCIs with either Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30.

    New Schaeffer products released today

Our local store here in Conroe, TX has it -- a little pricey but not bad considering the low volume of a typical Napa purchase.

    Landline Telephone with Answering Machine

Hard to beat Panasonic... Costco usually has one for about $100, I've had the same one running for 10 years or so without issue. Up until we moved into this house, I always had an "old faithful" POTS line. Unfortunately, the ILEC that serves the house abandoned the 20 year old copper plant in...

Should the windshield wash formula be part of the selection process?

The interesting thing here in TX is, stores "legally" cannot sell anything exceeding a certain mount of methanol... so 0°F is the lowest temperature rating you can typically find on the shelves here. I found a store selling Splash-brand purple stuff rated at -30°, so bought a case and start...
