I'll second or third the make sure the CCV is in working order. Be sure to check and clean the anti-drainback check valves and VANOS solenoids for crud in the screens. They collect carbon with approved oils. Owners are often surprised when they have crud in their "meticulously maintained" screens.

ESP of course, Amsoil, and Castrol 0W-30 (which filled my X3 for 135k miles up until I switched to HPL 0W-30 Supercar on a whim.The HPL is cleaning all the Castrol Red/Gold lacquer in my X3. Daughters 2008 328i never developed the lacquer as it has always had Amsoil in it.

They don't seal the fluid in the transmission. They hold the pan and compress the gasket to seal the fluid in the trans. This isn't a big deal. For solid advice, see what my wife says below: "Too much Jingle Bell. Should just to do it."

It has probably cleaned the lands between rings pretty good, but hasn't gotten in the grooves and behind the oil control rings and opened up the drain holes in the pistons yet. So the oil is getting up past the rings but can't drain through the piston drain holes yet.
